You probably right? People in their situation however, what dem fi do? If that was Jamaica with no political system or government; what you expect? Do you blame them to resort to such tactics to secure food fi dem family. Some warlords and gunemen in Jamaica resort to brutal violence fi less than that.

I think some of the somalis are frustrated and see no other option.
Others are just gangsters on the band wagon for money.

Handing out food aid to somalis rather than help them build a proper government with rule of law; what a pity - somalia has no oil to sell the west.

Tell us what you would do if you were the somalis in their situation?

First to refer to Somalia as a country or a nation is incorrect.

A failed state is only a country on a map, but not much beyond that.

A nation is a united people. Throughout history Somalia has been inhabited by many different kingdoms that have little in common. The current boundries are a product of former colonial powers Italy and Britain, and as you can see, did not, and will not work.

The pirate situation there is not a people struggling for freedom or fighting bablylon. It's a business that drives the economy in a place with no governement.

Each port has don that runs the place. There are different ethnic restaurants set up to meet the tastes of the hostages that are mostly Phillipinos and Indians. The whole operation is a Sunday-Thursday round the clock affair and you only read about the high profile highjackings. I'm certain there is an attempted highjacking taking place as you read this. It's a highly organised operation and it works. The reason they don't kill, is because its bad for business.

A spokesman for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Nick Nuttall, told VOA that for the past 15 years or so, European companies and others have used Somalia as a dumping ground for a wide array of nuclear and hazardous wastes.
&quot;There's uranium radioactive waste, there's leads, there's heavy metals like cadmium and mercury, there's industrial wastes, and there's hospital wastes, chemical wastes, you name it,” he said. “It's not rocket science to know why they're doing it because of the instability there.&quot;

Mr. Nuttall said it is impossible to know the exact tonnage or number of containers of wastes on Somalia's shores, but that the problem, in his words, &quot;is very serious.&quot;
The results of the contamination on coastal populations, Mr. Nuttall says, have been disastrous.
&quot;These problems range from acute respiratory infections to dry, heavy coughing, mouth bleedings, abdominal hemorrhages, what they described as unusual skin chemical reactions,” he noted. “So there's a whole variety of ailments that people are reporting from these villages where we had a chance to look. We need to go much further and farther in finding out the real scale of this problem.&quot;
According to the report, hazardous wastes in Somalia have also contaminated some groundwater areas there.
Note that the only time in recent years that Somalia became unified, without warlords and in relative peace was when the Islamic Courts took control. The US, under the pretext of &quot;war on terror&quot; organized a war by proxy by Ethiopia against Somalia, killing tens of thousands and displacing 400,000 refugees.

What may have started out as a noble attempt to make a stand against western countries making Somali shores a garbage dump seems to have become a way to get rich. Perhaps the lines have become blurred between what is noble and what is sinister.

Oh, and by the way, a friend of mine in England who works with a few Somailis mentioned to me that they said these &quot;pirates&quot; live it up over there and there is no &quot;trickle down&quot; effect going on. Money is used to arm themselves to intimidate on land and sea as well as to live large.

They are not kidnapping people, holding them hostages and making videos explaining their anger and plight and drawing world attention to it. The process is simple. We want your money and we have found a way to do it. Hold people hostage for money. That should draw sympathy.
