Much as this seems ashame, so many people don't have a proper roof over their heads much less for the government to provide one for abused women.

The question that I have on this is how well will these women be protected?

The policy of the government in most social welfare situations is to look for the next nearest relative that can help.
Much as I am a woman and think that these services are essential in any developed society, I don't think that Jamaica is so fully there yet to allocate enough resources to this area.

Nothing to stop voluntary bodies from establishing these though.

things are changing slowly as the problems many women face are having more and more attention turned to them.

there is a shelter and training program in Negril now, referred to as Theodora. Named after a saint I would wager but I am not sure. It's a partnership between three area churches and the government.

A safe house is under construction. However, the biggest hurdle is that many women don't know what abuse is, or what sexual harassment is. Many return to their situation, willingly, and will even lie to cover up and protect their abuser. For many there really are no options.

The programs that are in place now are concentrated on getting young people off the street, out of selling, and into jobs and participating members of society.

There is a religious aspect to the assistance, I believe church service is mandatory.

I've heard of other initiatives but this is the only one I am familiar with, remotely. I wouldn't mind helping them staff the safe house with security. A couple of lohans would keep the women safe against all comers, providing they wish to be safe.

all due to ignorance and lack of self-esteem...I fail to see how women can submit themselves to such physical abuse (dem roll dem all innah di dirt) etc in some of those gyrations.


...and yes, it is about time we have shelters for battered women who need to go there even temporarily until they sort themselves out.

it's crazy, I mean it is always crazy but this is like never before.
