Those life experiences are not unique to Jamaica; in fact those experiences are shared even by peoples in so-called 1st world countries, not just in the developing world. Struggle, oppression, injustice, love, peace, social commentary are not limited to a specific locale. And the beats/rhythms are easily mastered and no longer have to be done in Jamaica or by Jamaicans to have authenticity. I heard a track done by soul/jazz singer,Dianne Reeves and it was authentic reggae. I'm not a fan of Akon, but he has a track called &quot;Mama Africa.&quot; If you don't already have it, download it from an online music store, and pay attention to the accompaniment. It's one of the best reggae rhythms I've heard in a long time.

Reggae is Jamaica's gift and contribution to world music, but Jamaica doesn't own reggae.

Yuh si di problem here IMO, it agen will boil down to definition... as MG seh... one of the main ingredients to the music is the &quot;life experiences&quot;...the<span style="font-weight: bold"> SOUL</span> [to borrow from &quot;black American music&quot; that automatically seals...stamps it's 'AUTHENTICITY' ..if mi expressing that rightly..


Reggae is not only a syncopated beat...there is more to the music that that...one could even seh a &quot;spiritual&quot; connection that has to be experienced innah yuh life ...to the trained ear, and I am not saying ooono aize no trained...but if oono re listen to some of the music and compare and contrast...oono cyan easily pick hout yaawd Reggae from &quot;imported Reggae&quot;...there are good imitations, but that's about it....and den dat is ngle fimmi experience....and opinion.

however, it was jamaica that birthed reggae and dancehall, not the other countries sharing similar experiences. they developed their own musical language to express their stories, authentic to their culture.

well, i never said jamaica owned reggae. i made a comment about the authenticity of reggae produced by jamaicans versus that produced by foreigners. not disputing that others have taken on reggae and done good things with it, but when i listen to jamaican reggae, it sounds different to me to that produced by non-jamaicans, and i choose to ascribe authenticity to the jamaican version. still, i'll try to find time to listen to the tracks u've mentioned.

and as for dancehall - well, no non-jamaican i know of come close to dat yet...

It's extremely clear that the rest of the planet has absolutely no interest in dancehall, except for a few uber-hip Jampanese kids, like the girl who won best dancer in Mobay.

When there is a big international music festival with multiple artists, like U2 and Beyonce and so on, there is never a dancehall artist on the bill.

Almost every night in Countries as diverse as Columbia, Germany, Japan, England, Wales there is Dancehall music blasting out of HiFis and eager fans waiting to consume the pulsating rhythm...I know for sure because I send out a newsletter for a group of reggae aficionados.

i should introduce u to my canadian born kids and their friends, lol! when i came back from working in JA 10 years ago, Tanto Metro and Devonte had a hit (Everyone Falls in Love Sometime) playing on Canadian radio.
