sometimes its the 'forward ever' syndrome;

one bredrin i know said it would be like going backward...that once you leave a place, only a newer place will do if you want to move;
in fact most of the people i know who left jamaica as adults don't want to return to live...it seems like its mostly my generation who came here younger- as children, teenagers or early 20's, who are catching the nostalgia & disillusioned with farrin life;
we realize how precious the rock really is...farrin's artificial food, monotonous commuting & cold weather, crappy beaches have us yearning for home

I don't know how much of that is reality, and how much is perception. Crime is a reality yes, but a lot of it is gang-related/localized...it is not trivial but the perception probably magnifies the impact. Electricity cuts are not as frequent as they used to be, is not like seh this is Zimbabwe and the light can be relied on to be unreliable.

Kingston has almost all of those things listed; many good restaurants, some good theater productions, a good movie theater (Carib compares decently with any foreign cinema). I agree the public transport is an issue, you will need your own transport in Jamaica to be truly independent.

Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Mandeville have similar benefits to Kingston, albeit on a smaller scale...but if you move from the USA to the Jamaican countryside, you will have that boredom effect. On the other hand, life is what you make of it, and you can't move to the country expecting city life.

I came back home from the USA in 2006. It wasn't by choice, but having been back, I am glad I came back. I don't disagree that living here has its challenges, but I remember what JFK said: &quot;Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.&quot; Keeping that in mind has helped me really deal with the frustrations that living here CAN bring...but then is not as if the USA or Canada or the UK is a bastion of perfectionism either. This is my home. </div></div>

I was in the USA for college and grad school from 1999-2005, and was job-hunting till February 2006 when I came back home. It's true that the longer you are away, the harder it is to re-adjust...but I think that if you grew up in Jamaica and left when you were of adult age, like going to college or something, the adjustment should not be as bad as if you left in the 70's or 80's.

Nice to know that all you are hearing wouldn't deter you...

If that were my goal,I would go and check out the place, do a little private study and see what business I could do that wouldn't be in stiff competition while at the same time guarantees an income after expenses...for as far as *I* see it...every Jamaican is some sort of entrepreneur...oftentimes competing for the same customer.

I see the ambivalence and mixed feelings in dealing with the topic..

I think we have all reached the consensus that each and every country has it's share of problems and setbacks, and it's share of opportunities and enjoyment...it is a matter of preference and what is best suited for the individual that counts in the final analysis, when making some decisions.

Fascinating to see how the decision to leave home is/was apparently easier to make than the decision to return..
