Not for the benefit of the people,or any noble objectives, but to satisfy their own agendas.
It is all about using 'news' as a tool of manipulating emotions to achieve selfish objectives.

Why is it important to retrace the history of interference in Iran's affairs when it is not been disputed here?

As I write, I'm watching a live news conference Obama is giving. Despite criticisms from the right, and from some in the progressive community, I think he is doing the appropriate thing in not taking a definitive side in this conflict, and to frame his language in highly diplomatic terms. I heard him say that the US cannot definitively say which side has won (I'm paraphrasing here) because the US didn't have observers on the ground in Iran. I think he is doing the right thing here. He is mindful of the US involvement in the removal of Mosadeq, the democratically elected leader, in the 1950s, and the installation of the brutal Shah Pahlavi, American support for him during this period, and the fact that the US sided with Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war. I believe he is also mindful that while Mousavi and his supporters are calling for more openness and more freedoms, relations with the West will not automatically change should he prevail. Mousavi may be a more moderate version of his rival, but he is right of center.

also, while mousavi is being pitched as a liberal reformer as you note, it would seem he is more the anti-Ahmadinejad to the young people due to his history, which briefly, he was closely linked with the current Supreme Leader, was once already PM during Iran/Iraq War, aided and abetted Hezbollah against Israel, agreed with and might have been a hostage taker so on and so forth ...realistically as to the things important to the US nationally, there probably is not much to gain or look for either which way between these two. If you read up about him, he is basically cut from the same cloth as the current regime which is probably why they are letting this hash out.

The three major issues would still be in play- Israel, Nuclear Power, Iran/Iraq.

If the youth and the population of Iran were to reverse the revolution further to the point where the government would be restored to a more persian sense...they would probably be taking more stands publicly about the situation.

The question posed by Tuff's article is the poignant one.

The US, probably quite literally, has nothing to gain by being vocal beyond the stance they have taken- which is to say don't use or resort to state violence to quell legitimately peaceable public assemblies and 'we're monitoring the situation closely'...

Your arguments was way out of context, almost anyone over 20 who have at least heard of the West involvement in Iran, especially since GWB War-In-Error, this has been gone over hundreds of times on this very board.

What is idiotic is to use any random arguments to answer unrelated questions, something you specialize in.
You claim interference but could show not one ounce of proof.

ROME, June 22 (Reuters) - Italy is willing to open its embassy in Tehran to wounded protesters in coordination with other European nations, the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The move follows a Swedish initiative to look into whether European Union nations can put together a plan to take in and provide aid to demonstrators at their embassies in Iran, the ministry said.
&quot;The Italian embassy will be able to accept requests, despite the fact that the proper place for the care of the injured remains the hospital,&quot; Maurizio Massari, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, told reporters.
Italy, which has called on Tehran to avoid further bloodshed and seek a peaceful solution to the protests, has already instructed its embassy in Iran to assist wounded protesters but has not yet received requests for help, the ministry said.
