If you point out that the Transatlantic Slave Trade was bad, one of the worse things in history of mankind that could ever befall a people.

i have never excused africans participating in the slave trade nor have i posted 'tons' of info regarding the slave trade- i have responded to posts on slavery but have rarely posted on the subject myself...this is a fabrication by you to suit your ends as usual;
you are severely mis-informed if you believe that african involvement in the slave trade was on par or of the same dynamics as it was for europe...this is a myth perpetuated by those (like you) who wish to downplay what in fact was one of the greatest holocausts in human history

LOL I never said anything about equal and I am not fabricating one bit. You claim fabrication by me yet here you are admitting to what you have said in the not too distant past.

I don't expect 'balance' from journalists; I'm not even sure if I believe in the concept of 'balance.' So I'm not expecting some objective and balance portrayal of Jamaica.

The truth hurts, and it makes us angry, but it's still the truth, and we must re-direct our anger away from this Trini -whatever his motivations - to where and who it belongs: to the political directorate in Jamaica, the enablers, and those who have failed to keep them accountable.

Exactly, did you notice the speedy response of the &quot;Jamaican establishment&quot;? As hard as it might be for some to stomach, its reality. Sir Trevor never reported anything that wasn't true, if it takes this type of programming to hold the powers that be accountable for their actions, then so be it.

Patrick Manning has promoted his vision for uniting the states of the Caribbean
Trinidad and Tobago has given notice that it is eager to affirm the role of big brother in the Caribbean Community (Caricom).
The country's Prime Minister Patrick Manning has put forward new proposals for economic cooperation with four of its financially-stressed neighbours.

A previous initiative with Barbados in the 1980s - which included a joint venture air cargo company and a cement factory - ended in relative failure.

The cargo firm has long since disappeared and the cement plant in northern Barbados was eventually rescued by a Trinidad firm.

Mr Manning is clearly prepared to try again as he surveys the difficult landscape in the region.

&quot;The disparity in the economic position between Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the Caribbean is sometime that is a source of concern,&quot; he told parliament last month.

Growing ties

Mr Manning said the government was considering ideas for projects with Grenada, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica.

Grenada has already confirmed that it had been approached to host an aircraft maintenance facility for Port of Spain's Caribbean Airlines.

Foreign minister Peter David said the plan was another sign of the growing relationship between the two countries.

Perhaps the most significant project is the resurrection of a proposal to sell liquefied natural gas to Jamaica.

Trinidad and Tobago signed an agreement in 2004 to sell Jamaica 1.1 million tonnes of LNG per year for 20 years, beginning in 2009.

Trinidad later said it could not supply the gas to Jamaica because supplies were inadequate.

But Mr Manning told parliament that supplies had become available because the global supply and demand situation for gas has changed.

Falling prices

The two countries had haggled in the past over Jamaica's claim to be sold the product at the same price as Trinidad's principal buyer the United States.

Details like those will have to be fleshed out and feasibility studies conducted.
The economic crisis has led to a reduction of growth in the Caribbean

But Mr Manning said his country &quot;cannot sit idly by&quot; while its neighbours suffered.

Trinidad and Tobago relies on natural gas and oil for 40 percent of its gross domestic product and 80 percent of its exports. The oil portion continues to shrink somewhat.

Even though falling oil prices have hurt Trinidad and Tobago revenues this year, the country is still far better positioned than almost all of the region to weather the economic crisis.

Mr Manning noted that the jobless rate in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) was between 15 and 25 percent.

He said: &quot;If the economic situation in those countries is unable to guarantee their populations a standard of living to which they aspire, then that is likely to lead to mass migration into the areas where they feel a better way of life might be available.&quot;

Opposition

That argument did not find favour with the Trinidad Guardian newspaper which said that no migration phenomenon had taken place during the past 15years even though Trinidad's growth has generally outstripped Caricom's.

The paper also called on him to provide more evidence that his project will yield for the country.

That was a point taken up strongly by Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday who said, the government should look after its own citizens first.

&quot;Right now, I do not think we can afford this,&quot; he said.

Leader of the small opposition Congress of the People party, Winston Dookeran, was more supportive.

&quot;I have no doubt that we should increase our investment (in the region),&quot; he told BBC Caribbean.

Trinidad already has a functioning so-called petroleum fund to help out needy Caricom nations on a case by case basis.

Apart from the migration fears, Mr Manning said Trinidad and Tobago's well-being depended on the health of Caricom, which is the country's second largest trading partner after the United States.

A fifth of exports go to the OECS region, with which Trinidad and Tobago is also seeking to forge an economic union - another sign that it is prepared to flex its financial muscle.

Sir Trevor left Trinidad many years ago, he was the UK's premier newscaster (anchor) is seen as a pillar of the establishment and sees himself as British through and through. I don't think he deliberately went out of his way to denigrated Jamaica although for balance he could have highlighted the problems Trinidad and the wider Caribbean is currently experiencing. But that doesn't take away from the fact that what was shown about Jamaica was true.

The Editor, Sir:

Trevor McDonald, the British-Trinidadian broadcaster, in his portrayal of Jamaica on the British ITV Channel 1 station, July 5, understandably upset a whole lot of people with his portrayal of Jamaica.

Generally, it appears that British media depiction of Jamaica is 'negative' - that Jamaica is an island full of drug-pushers, murderous gangs, ghettos, with extreme poverty juxtaposed against small enclaves of rich and privileged people. Jamaicans, therefore, see this foreign reportage as biased and purposefully destructive to the interest of Jamaica.

I am surprised, though, that with all the negative images about Jamaica many tourists still come, and want to come, to Jamaica. Obviously, there are some great plusses in Jamaica, and as a Jamaican I can attest to some of these positives, e.g., the natural beauty of the island and the broad and beautiful smile of a kind, rural Jamaican person.

Anyway, there is clearly a bias against Jamaica by some foreign correspondents, but one would hope that Sir Trevor is not biased against Jamaica. Maybe his portrayal of Jamaica is a stance on the part of his producers to sell the programme. After all, 'bad news' sells newspapers and TV programmes.

However, despite the apparent bias and sensationalism of such programmes as Sir Trevor's, we as Jamaicans must be frank to ourselves and admit that Jamaica has its disproportionate share of social and economic problems. We also have to realise that we cannot take refuge in the notion that 'they are out to get us'. We should be mature enough to say 'we have problems, much of them of our own making'. Therefore, we should be brave enough to throw up our hands in the air and say 'guilty'. That we are sorry; that we plan to do better, and need the help of every person of goodwill, both at home and abroad, to make Jamaica a better place.

I am very upset at the disgraceful remarks made by Sir Trevor McDonald about my country. I just returned from Jamaica a couple days and, to be frank, I am still wondering why I have been away for so long.

Jamaica is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, and believe me, I have been around the world, i.e., Europe, Mexico and some of the Caribbean countries, and I am still saying that Jamaica is one of the most beautiful places I have seen.

Yes, it does have its share of violence and poverty, but you name one country where there is not crime and proverty. Let's not even talk about Trinidad. If Sir Trevor wants to talk about crime and proverty he needs to talk about his own country, Trinidad and Tobago.

The Editor, Sir:
I now see that a few officials in Jamaica have seen this ITV programme done by Sir Trevor McDonald. I live in the UK and I watched the programme. What struck me as odd was that Sir Trevor didn't go back to his native Trinidad, instead, he went to Jamaica.

The only thing I can think of is that he might find crime and violence, drug trafficking and some racial tension as well in Trinidad and Tobago. Not to mention the fact that Trinidad had an attempted-coup blight against its name.

I have no idea what Sir Trevor's motive is for depicting Jamaica in such poor light, but I am absolutely outraged that he was allowed to walk into Jamaica and do this film without any Jamaican official seeing the final version. However, this is not the first time this has happened. Ross Kemp did a programme about Jamaican gangs and showed our police station in Western Kingston, and was allowed access to the vault of the station where they confiscated guns.

One thing I do know is that the two founding fathers of our nation, Sir Alexander Bustamante and Norman Manley, would never have taken this lying down.

Our Jamaican politicians need to wake up.
