Mr johnson, owns at least before the crash about 100 plus hotel properties,with brands like Hilton Sherato, Marriots along with the Hotel 6 and Doubletrees. He sold it to peopel who decide that if they dum down the editiroal and grammer, blacks won't mind it.
They will stil subscribe. afterall they have no other choice.
They forgot about the internet.

</div></div> Sport and entertainment are the station reserved for blacks. And only as the workers too. Nit in theaeas of management,ownership etc. They can get 5% yes but minority intrest in any investment in any concern, only gurantees a share in the loss.

Agreed. I stopped reading Ebony and Jet when I was in University.

The grammar was atrocious and the stories simply werent relevant to me. It was a waste of money to me.

I am an avid reader of Essence though. Sometimes their main story (or who they choose to push as their main story) is kind of weak, but it is one of the better black magazines out there.

I know everyone says the internet is killing print miedia, but I am one of those old school ppl that loves the smell of ink on paper. I buy magainzes religiously...every month...without fail....even thought I have digital subscriptions to certain ones.

Cant beat ink and paper and I will never giver it up for a computer screen.

Biography of Robert Johnson: Robert Johnson was born in Hickory, Mississippi in 1946. He was the ninth of ten children born to Archie and Edna Johnson. Searching for a better life, the Johnsons moved to Freeport, Illinois. Robert attended the University of Illinois where he met his wife Sheila Crump. He graduated from the university in 1968 and then earned a Master’s degree in public administration from Princeton University. Robert then moved to Washington D.C. where he launched his career in television.


How the Business Started: Since Johnson’s Princeton days, he knew the power of television could help promote black businesses and culture. With his interest in broadcasting growing, Johnson landed a job as a lobbyist for the National Cable Television Association (NCTA). In 1978, he began developing his innovative plan to produce television programs targeted to black viewers. To help launch this effort, Tom Wheeler, president of the NCTA, gave Johnson $15,000 as an initial investment. Johnson later convinced John Malone, the president of Tele-Communications, Inc., to invest $500,000 in the project. In what proved to be a fortunate break, Johnson met with Bob Rosencrans, the president of UA-Columbia Cablevision, at an NCTA annual convention. Eager to help make Johnson’s dream a reality, Rosencrans said he owned slots on a cable TV satellite that Johnson could use for his new channel. With all of the parts in place to begin, Johnson named his nascent business venture, Black Entertainment Television (BET). At 11 p.m., on January 8, 1980, BET officially aired its maiden program and eventually became the first and largest black-owned broadcasting company on cable television.

Outstanding Contributions:

Entrepreneurs create new jobs: Robert Johnson has created jobs for hundreds of African Americans who otherwise might not be employed in television or related industries. Johnson developed a television network and business venture that would be a role model for African Americans in America and around the world. As it stands, BET’s current slate of variety shows and dramas are providing more opportunities for black writers, directors, producers and artists.

Entrepreneurs improve our position in global economic competition: BET continues to expand its corporate reach, and is now involved in publishing, retail clothing, restaurants, hotels, casinos, financial services and computer content development. I thought I heard the same thing too: that the company was sold many many moons ago. I didnt think Johnson owned it anymore - at least not a majority stake.

The demise of E &amp; J was predicted at least 5 years ago when the daughter was put in charge after her father's death.

She is stubborn, egotistical and refuses to consider suggestions put to her about how to improve the business, subscriptions or its reputation.

Lots of in-fighting, family rivalry and money-hungry people fighting for position instead of continuing the family vision.

They should have advanced the mag by revisiting their target market and selling to the gap-market (the over 50). Why would any 18 - 35 yr old be interested in reading a magazine that has not changed its format for over 50 years?

One of my daughters was an intern there and gave me the low down.

I am not familiar with Latina.

Essence went online and have changed their format/editor etc. a few times. They listen to and implement their subscribers feedback. They are not afraid to say &quot;sorry, we messed that one up&quot; and revamp as a result.

I think Essence has done well with their marketing, demographic focus and advancing the vision.

This is a great example of two companies...one with a plan and one without.

Latina magazine was a US latin version of essence magazine targeted toward bilingual latina women. They had articles in both Spanish &amp; English. I just saw where they are now part of Latina Media Ventures - no longer related to Essence
