On the question of what haooened, I think that he lost his temper and the officer decidee to teach him the usual lesson, reserved for blacks. It did not matter that he was in any specific neighbor hood. The college that we work. the college police regularly follow black professors and students around and ask for IDs. That is when they feel like , just to keep us on our toes. Lest we forget that the rights we enjoy, is transient.

HOWEVER...I don't see this whole Gates-Crowley incident as an example of racial profiling. Yes, it involved a Black man and a white officer but if you check it deeply, it had more to do with class and ego. A blue collar white officer versus a leading scholar in African-American studies and academia. Both men let their pride get the best of them and became indignant about the fact that the other DARE test his manhood and challenge his authority.

I live in Boston--the neighboring city to Cambridge which is where the incident took place. Cambridge has a long history of being very culturally diverse and accepting BUT the class war is alive and well. Again, affluent academics in conflict with poor and working-class whites, African-Americans and immigrants.

Does racism still exist in America? OF COURSE...it is alive and well!! But the Gates-Crowley "showdown" is being misused to make the case.

This is something that just about every black that happen to reach the levels of society reserved for whites only. So it is about class, but that class is based on racist resentment of the officer. they have a way to couch their questions to show complete disdain, when they see that you really belong in an area, they could never in their wildest dreams achieve. that is where the class comes it. incidentally there are blacks that are also jealous of other blacks, but those are the ones who believe that they are supposed to be <span style="font-weight: bold">the only black</span> to do what they have done. Those are the really dumb ones that usually fall on their faces later.

As you laugh at me it remind me of when I was in my 20's i told a Jamaican police officer that What I pay as taxes for 1 month pays him for years.. He was so embarrassed, that i became really sorry I said it. i apologise. to him. and show him my license which I really did not have to Since I was on my own premises and was not driving any vehicle. i suppose he wanted to know my name or something.
