well it's nothing new;
the hair creming is an even bigger scourge than skin-bleaching if you ask me- simply because it is not even considered anything strange by most, but yu done know already-
over the last 500 years the globe has been indoctrinated with the theory that the closer to nordic european the greater the beauty...
the problem is that africans have accepted this philosophy;
it's no surprise to see this in jamaica (the queen's subjects) where foreign philosophies still rule the minds of many and foreigners still rule & control what the media pushes down the people's throats;
it is the same in any other black country...
you will be hard-pressed to find even on the african continent very many african women touting their own natural features as beauty...they will try to conform to a european standard, simply because people are like sheep;
they go along with tradition & the mother by her actions, teaches the daughter & the cycle continues;
as far as the beauty contests...the ruling classes put judges & parameters in place to re-inforce self-hatred & low self-esteem amomg the masses & props up an identity that few have or can attain except by mutilating their god-given features;
a fire and more fire

More like pony.
but what is "average"? It's all relative. I saw the miss world competition this year (I think it was last week) and Ms Jamaica was a dark skinned woman, and I'm pretty sure that's how is was the year before that, and maybe before that as well. Here's an idea: maybe the light skinned contestants who have won competed better than the others, just like how when the darker skinned contestants win it's because they competed better than the others
I think people just need to get over it, and accept how any Ms. Jamaica looks, support them, and root for them as they compete.
