If di tieves dem ah goh live by di old west cow-thieves standards inna dem cow-boy movies, den di farmer need fi organize an get armed like dem did back den, an track dung di well known cow thieves, an tek dem into custody, since di law hav noh intention fi protect di farmers.

i don't understand if police don't have resources to tackle homicide, etc, why farmers think dem gwine come tackle cow and ackee teef yuh either gwine to write it off as a loss or prepare to fight with them on a daily basis

tehre was an attitude in Rural Jamaica that cow owners are rich and white ... There was also an attitude that sufferas should be given a bly.... so for decades predial laceny though apparently low in value was not worth investigating..

As to the killing attitude.. there was a story of a promient family who happened to be white.. if i mentioned the name RichD would immiditely know who it was... ( He was considered the smartest person ever at Munro)... Well the fatehr worked for a agricultural enterprise that owned cows,,, He shot a youth who he accused was stealing his animals..nothing came of it...

Personally i suggest that we adopt a law of Babylon.. The Hammaduri code... Not the part associated with slavery but the part assoicated with Predial laceny... if you are guilty of stealing crops you have to restore to the injured party ten times the value..if you cant you are put to death...

Each time some one steals there is a huge waste.. thhere is alot of damage more so than the value of the crops taken....

farmers had strategies... From sleep in fields with a machete... but then the themselves arrived with guns.... the other is never farm near a road.. if u cant see it you cant steal it....
one strategy that used to be used to deter thieves was to tell people you poisoned some of the crops and you visted an obeah man out of parish to get hte posion... so disappear for a day,.. that detered the children who steal anything cucumber carrots for the adventure.... And the old trick of planting a couple tobbacco plants and telling every one you put a tobbaco leaf under a pumkin or melon.. the other was to soak a plant in insecticide and i know i did that and that some one who i suspected of stealing my callalo died in hospitals in agony... and there was a rumour he was obeahed...

any way good news this weekend the drought has broken..octobver rain came to most of Jamaica.. i watched a football match at Santa and it rained!!!!!!!

There is a better chance I would return to a Jamaica where violent criminals have the fear of who they might have to deal with than the way things stay now.

I think we are in agreement that something has to be done. Jamaica needs to "change course". The police (to a large and unacceptable degree) are ineffective and corrupt. Better to have the average citizen take control to protect what they have and not depend on the police.

Isn't the definition of insanity continuing the same way and expecting a different result?

And "farming far from the road" is just a non-solution.

So what to do?

RADA lists the five reasons why there is a decline in beef production:

1. Importation of cheaper beef especially as it relates to “Choice Cuts”
2. The perceived negative health concerns (health concerns associated with mad cow disease in the past)
3. High input costs (especially for commercial feed and medication)
4. Lack of youth involvement
5. Larceny of livestock

Interestingly the solutions they put forward do not address 4. and 5. So goodbye to cattle production in Jamaica. Aye sah.

A farmer was thrown before the court for chopping two cows which he allegedly saw eating his bananas on his farm.
Trevor Easton, 54, of Temple Hall in St Andrew, chopped the two cows in their back after he saw them on his property in Temple Hall on September 12.
When asked by Magistrate Simone Wolf-Reece why he had injured the cow, Easton said: "Frustration."

On Thursday when he appeared in court, Easton pleaded guilty to killing or injuring an animal.
He then explained to the court that the cows went on his property and destroyed his pineapples and other produce that he had planted.
Easton in his court document reported that he had left for England in 2002 and left his farm in the care of the complainant but that the complainant allowed his cows to damage the farm.

However, Easton said that on his return to Jamaica he met with the complainant and advised him that he should keep his cows off the property and had even reported the matter to the police.
On the day in question, Easton said he was going on his property when he saw the cows eating his banana and he got upset and chopped them and then went to report the matter.

The complainant, for his part, told the court that he had 14 cows and that a police sergeant had spoken to him about the cows going on Easton's property and had threatened to take them to the pound.
The complainant said he tied up the cows on his farm but one of the animals that went on to Easton's farm was a little calf who could not yet be tied as it would used the rope to hang itself.
He said that the calf got a chop on its shoulder.

As for the other injured cow, the complainant said that the animal had been tied on a peg but that the cow pulled out the peg from in the ground and went onto Easton's farm.
"When I look at the bull, fi him spine chop right into two," he said.
RM Wolf Reece then asked the complainant: "Do you accept that your cows damaged his thing?"

The complainant in reply said he had not seen the damage.
The magistrate, however, came to the conclusion that both men had issues that needed to be resolved and ordered them to meet with the probation officer to discuss their issues and to return to court on November 6.
