When its hot in the jungle of peace I go swimming in the ocean of love.....
My Friend P thinks that Prime Minister B must be suffering from sleep deprivation or excessive barking dog syndrome to have announced the planned honours for our golden record-breaking boy Usain Bolt.
At 23 years old, after two consecutive athletic seasons of setting the sporting world on fire with his 'Insain' mind-boggling runs in the 100m and 200m, Prime Minister B announced yesterday in Parliament that Bolt will be awarded:
The Order of Jamaica, the nation's fourth-highest honour [The Honourable Usain Bolt is how we must now address him]
Ambassador at Large [A sweet diplomatic passport]
And the renaming of Highway 2000, the toll road, to the Usain Bolt Highway [hmm, wonder if our fleet-footed boy wonder will have to pay the toll on his own road?]
This announcement has sparked a complete day of debate with many people saying hold up guys - the fellow is only 23, and just maybe the government has gone a little overboard.
I have to side with the overboard part of the debate and again I am bemused by what the prime minister is doing, or trying to do. I am OK with the Ambassador at Large title and all that goes with it. After all, he is hassled wherever in the world he goes now, and it is the sort of comfort that a Jamaican son such as Usain deserves to have.
drunk in peace
But the Order of Jamaica and the renaming of the French people's leased toll road is over the top as far as we can assess. Imagine, young Bolt suddenly has to be paying attention to this honourable mention that is going to be bestowed upon him. Can the young man get drunk in peace and get on bad where he feels? In short, as a young man, can he engage in stuff that is considered not honourable on a social scale? Please, I am not suggesting anything illegal or dishonest now, just the trappings that are linked morally with the OJ honour.
The renaming of the road - how inappropriate. First up, this is the road where our star nearly got killed, and the PM figures it would be suitable to rename it after him. This road has absolutely nothing to do with track and field, nor does it resonate with anything Bolt is made of ... apart from the accident. Can you imagine how much more we will bond with our favoured son each year when the toll rate increases are announced. What a way to recall our hero!
our hero
If something is to be named after our hero it ought to be in Trelawny, that is where the boy hails from, or it most definitely must have something to do with track and field. Invest the money, Prime Minster B, get a lovely black, green or gold track put into a remodelled Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium and bring track and field to western Jamaica in a way that has never been done before, in the Usain Bolt Stadium.
Truth is, I believe that the prime minister is the consummate politician, and this plethora of debates on the Bolt awards has not been presented by accident or sheer love of Bolt. After all, imagine all of yesterday the airwaves were filled with talk about the Bolt awards, no mention of the lingering extradition matter for a gentleman in the PM's constituency, or that $60 million bill on Minister H's house, or the need for us all to know the terms and conditions of the IMF deal. Hmm.

Do forgive me if I am missing something here. The PM made the announcement in the House, and I am assuming that the Opposition was there to hear it, was there any opposition that we don't know?
I don't agree with the 2000 road renaming, I would welcome a road named in his Parish, and with the OJ, a promised date, say in the next 10 years 'You will be an OJ'.
What is needed is some speaking and interviewing skill training, so they can better market themselves and the country.
