District Attorney Drops Charges Against 4 Men

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - A Hofstra University student admitted Wednesday that she made up a story about being gang raped by five men. The District Attorney dropped all of the charges against four defendants in the case.

The woman had told police that she was attacked at about 3 a.m. on Sunday after being lured into a men's bathroom in the dormitory.

Jesus Ortiz, 19, and Rondell Bedward, 21, both of the Bronx were arraigned on rape charges on Monday.

Stalin Felipe, 19, of the Bronx, and Kevin Taveras, 20, of Brentwood, Long Island were arraigned Tuesday in Hempstead.

Bedward is a Hofstra student, police said. The others are his friends.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said, while she was being questioned Wednesday evening, the woman admitted that the encounter was consensual.

Nassau County Judge Robert Bruno quickly dismissed the charges and ordered their release.

Rice says her office has launched an immediate criminal investigation into the statements and reports given by the woman in connection with this incident.

There had been anger on the Hofstra campus that students and parents were not alerted quickly enough about the reported sex attack.</span>

'consensual' I think is a red flag...speculating.

very sad to see this story. reminds me of something similar that happened at a spring break party.

it was rape but the girl switched to saying it was consensual.

without having more details it is impossible to know. I understand now it is an investigation focusing on the young woman, and if it was rape whatever she says about it won't have much to do with it anymore.

this is what is nagging at me too

I know girls that have done so just to not have to deal with going through a trial...hoping if they say it was consensual they can forget the matter. But that is never the edn result.

I really hope this is not the case for this girl.

heard this this morning..did not know what to make of it...but from wha me undastand this type of ting goes done fairly often on college campus..friend of mind was raped at nyu when she was younger..she implied that she was held down by friends..me neva have de hawt fe ask har bout it... really messed with her head..thankfully she's happily married with kids..but boy did she put that man through a lot before she could trust him

i did find it interesting that after they said the charges had been dismissed..they proceeded to read the guys names out 1 by 1

whatever the case was..I hope she comes through OK

this morning on NY1 (fuss time me hear bout it) they said she had withdrawn the charges, charges had been dismissed by the DA, <span style="font-weight: bold">den</span> dem read out the boys names..
