While you're at it, try changing your history books. Many Jamaicans of Chinese, Indian, European, Middle eastern ancestry had their names upon migrating to Jamaica during the 1800s and even earlier. Sometimes they had no choice but to accept the anglicized version of their names.

For you to change your name is a personal choice, much as your interpretation of history. It has validity and can be supported by fact. That is your choice, your opinion, your interpretation. It neither requires approbation nor condemnation. There are factors in history that will contradict your interpretations. Whether these factors have mitigated against your thesis central tenant may depend both on ones knowledge of history and ones interpretation.

I believe the effect of an event is reverse exponential when plotted against the time. For instance.. Tackies rebellion is less relevant than Bogles which is less relevant than Walter Rodney, which is less relevant that the ongoing Dundus saga.. What has this got to do with your name? Our people were principal African.. (I am of Taino heritage). Thus slavery, rebellion, tacit compliance, post emancipator migration bother internal and external is as much part of our identity . The events still echo, the ripples of time are still there but the poltical effects of more recent events have a greater impact locally than those which we stand back from a distance….

This African heritage has influenced our world view, it has influenced us to the very core- irrespective of our origin. But does changing your name on migration help put one morsel of food on the table in Jamaica, nor does it ameolirate the poverty, nor does it save one poor blackmans life taken on the island ???? That is my position. Maybe a descendant of yours will because of your name change have a greater impact and identify the moment that you change your name as the visceral effective moment that inspired. He /she participate in the ameoliration of our distress. But that is a hope… Not to be dismissed..

I am not an athesist.. I believe there was once gods but they were murdered one September day in the 15th century. I too believe that the bible is simply a collection of proto-Jewish myths, rituals, morality and badly remembered history. But in the context of Jamaica it has significance beyond its simplity. …The bible has a central part in our existence.. As both a revolutionary manual, a book of hope, an education tool.. It is one of the tool that evolved.. Our ancestors who could read were taught out to do so out of it…Rasta our modern unique take on Christianity used it to evolve and validate itself.. of which we should be proud.

I thus don’t feel comfortable and never will when there are comments that state that our elders/ ancestors are not educated, or mid educated when their view points vary from ours. Education is not merely what is taught but what is experienced. What mechanisms are learnt to survive, what are passed on.

We cannot simply ignore these factors and take a historical leap over jumping the influences both political and historical to a point of unmitigated African DNA. Cultural, this is IMHO like a Christian fundamentalist ignoring the previous interpretations of Christianity denying their authenticity and looking back at the bible.. And in the end dismissing our ancestor’s experiences perception as mis education. Does it really matter that your family judge you a devil on your choice??? I believe you were aware that the name change would not be met with affirmation nor approbation.. and it did not come as a surprise….


Even by taking a Ghanaian name one questions the authenticity / validity the very visceral connections …The slave trade in its existence was transcontinental.. there were slave caravans crisscrossing the continent, thus slaves from as far a field as the horn of Africa.. Slaves were shipped both by Caravan and Caravel from Mozambique, Ethiopia, Temba, Dar al Salaam, Zanzibar not simply those that are were from west Africa.. Think on this… the rate of attrition in Jamaica and the West Indies was such that on the end of the Official Slave Trade in 1809 to Jamaica the slave population actually fell… My thesis is that the West African Coast population had been effectively harvested in previous centuries, (I use emotive language as its impact is more real)…That the later arrivals who’s DNA is more in our islands principal blood lines was not likely to West African but central and east Africa . I know the records may say that, but the fact that people were classified by the port of exit in Africa not origin.

That the population that remained at the end in West Africa were more likely than not to have been involved in the trade of humans.. The later arrivals to Jamaica were thus from populations deeper within the continent than the coast..

If you chose to take an African / Ghanaian name thus it will have connection, a connection to both trader and victim.

But I am proud of my Jamaicaness with its fallacies, myths icons… I believe we must embrace the entire history with its horror, hazards, betrayals compromises, collaborations cowards.. not just its mythical heroes. For at the end our ancestors greatest achievements was survival, all of them had a part in it….

You all know I am not conscious, don’t know history, am a class traitor, long winded, uneducated, ignorant, ultimately stupid… I accept all these labels with aplomb.. It saves time me saying this because.. I know I will be accused by a sizable conscious popularist majority… so destroy my interpretation of history not the ad homiums… ( I always recall Tropi telling me that I was wrong because I disagreed with Malcolm on his popularist house slave slogan)

i may go the route of some african nations (&quot;tribes&quot whose naming system is totally different than the english/western standard of a first name &amp; a last (family) name...
as some of those tribes do, perhaps someday i will have a 'western' name and another name from my particular tribal point of view (an african name, a rastafari name, etc.) to be also official along with my babylon name...
only to make it easier for the gov't when dealing with documents done in my given gov't recorded name...

but it's a great topic &amp; one i have thought about a lot...
i have had an african alias for a long time; i chose swahili- but chose the name due to meaning &amp; also similarity to gov't name...

Well to reply to that all I can say is No Wahalla...

I took my board name because the term Wahalla is used constantly in Nigeria.. it slips off the tongue... Funny enough each language group in nigeria divorse themselves from the term.. all deny it is from them.... as you say in Nigeria.. Plenty Wahalla...

It is an interesting subject.. I dont feel there is a right or wrogn answer a couple comments: I held residencies in Nigeria, China and Kazahstan... And I noticed that the local people adobted western names to sue in the buisness... In china that was more common.. My sectary / assistant was a Susan... she was a tall attractive lady from Manchuria... Cack batty not agricultural legs though... She was brilliant kept sending me anti Japanese jokes...she said it was save us forgien dogs the embarassment of being laughed at when we miss pronouced their names.. the chinese guy who did all my work was named David from Harbin province! He was brilliant and better organised than me..

another comment is that there has been a change in the use of names in Jamaica. I first acknowledged this in a book by Richard Dreyfuss and Turtledove. (Two Georges). in slavery in Jamaica Slaves were often given names based on classical themes.. Melanus, Achilles, Odeyseus, Nestor (bobs middle name) Ceasaer, Augustus, Nero, Menom, Agamemnon ect.... I had a childhood friend that gloried in the name Septimus.. We called him Septi... I wanted to call my son that (you all know why ?) but we went the X route...another friedn who recently died gloried in the name Leartes.. (Fatehr of Odeyseus).. these are now old fashioned now.. But that has been an evolution... a cultural shift away from what was imposed... is that not a more than subtle rejection of so called ******* names..

another comment is in Cuba there has been an explosion of names starting with Y among the Afro-Cubans .. This is actually a subtle rebellion against the state.. A rejection of the Marxist dogma and a shift towards an acknowleddgement of afro centricity.. It started among veterans of cubas military adventures in Africa, the realisation that the politeriat struggle ignored race.. The Y comes out of words in Youruba and Ibo.. And part of a return to Santaria... Again a rejection of so called ******* names..

I am lucky my real life name comes from the same root as Canoe.. indeed that was one of my child hood names..

but hte normal provisios.. I dont know any thing and yankis tell me I am ignorant..

On the topic....the mzungu names are (unfortunately) a part of our history so I don't think we should change them but I do think we shoudl give you children African first names.
