The Moon suffers much more violent impacts every year as fairly large sized meteors crash into its surface. The same type of meteors plunge towards Earth but burn up in the atmosphere. The Moon has virtually no atmosphere so they actually crash and form craters. The entire record of these impacts is preserved for everyone to see. So two lilly NASA probes are small potatoes compared to what has happened before, what is happening now, and what will happen in the future.

is today's rocket going into a crater to take advantage of the depth already there from a previous meteor crash? also, wouldnt a meteor already have penetrated to the subsurface to show the existence of water? why is a rocket needed to do this?

In terms predicting the exact impact location, they did aim at a large, but there is some degree of uncertainty in where the LCROSS probe and the vehicle itself actually hit.

A spacecraft is needed to first create an impact and then to use a spectrometer to measure the chemical constituents of the resulting debris plume. We generally don't know when and where other meteor impacts occur so we cannot retrieve that information during other impact events. Water kicked up by any random meteor-created plume would likely sublimate before we would even point our instruments at the event. At least with LCROSS we know where and when to point the instruments.

will moon drilling change the behavior of the moon. You may think random meteorites but I am sure there is a balance. Now with drilling it will be in a general location causing imbalance no?

sorry that technology does not exist.... I would have bought.. if it did we weould have been harvesting gas hydrates.. instead they drill in sposts to avoid it.. the drilling industry is scared of shallow gas like puss...

This idea innovative and effective... the idea is beautiful in its simplistic... and if it produces a big a splash... the target spot is ideal in permanent shade.. However the indians last month proved there was water on the moon... at least in micro quantities if they find it thetre there will be a ifferent proposition... however.. finding water is half the issue splitting it and using it will be an engineering challenge.. if it were easy we would not be worried about the price of oil.. Water by its nature is hard molecule to split..

the issue will be if it is in a crater the target is likely to be glassified from the previous impact.. thus unlikely to have a dust plume... good idea though....
