The two suspects arrested shortly after the shooting have been released, according to the office of U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, whose district includes Fort Hood.

Fort Hood shooting: Nidal Malik Hasan 'said Muslims should rise up'

Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who killed 11 people before being shot dead at Fort Hood, had said Muslims should &quot;rise up&quot; and attack Americans in retaliation for the US war in Iraq, a former army colleague said last night.

Col Terry Lee, a retired officer who worked with him at the military base in Texas, described angry confrontations between Maj Hasan and other officers after he expressed his views.

Maj Hasan was reportedly fighting orders to be deployed to Iraq at the end of the month, claiming that he was the victim of harassment and insults because of his Arab background and his faith.

The major was a psychiatrist who had been treating soldiers returning from Iraq for post-traumatic stress and alcohol and drug abuse problems.

&quot;He was making outlandish comments condemning our foreign policy and claimed Muslims had the right to rise up and attack Americans,&quot; Col Lee told Fox News.

&quot;He said Muslims should stand up and fight the aggressor and that we should not be in the war in the first place.&quot; He said that Maj Hasan said he was &quot;happy&quot; when a US soldier was killed in an attack on a military recruitment centre in Arkansas in June. An American convert to Islam was accused of the shootings.

Col Lee said that other officers had told him that Maj Hasan had said &quot;maybe people should strap bombs on themselves and go to Time Square&quot; in New York.

<span style="font-weight: bold">He said he was aware that the major had been subject to &quot;name calling&quot; during heated arguments with other officers.</span>

Maj Hasan's cousin Nader Husan said he was happy working for the military but did dread deployment to Iraq.

Mr Hasan said his cousin was a US-born Muslim who had joined the military after high school. He had served as a psychiatrist at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC, which treats many badly wounded troops.

&quot;He was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed dealing with the people coming back and ... trying to help them with their trauma,&quot; he said.

He said his cousin had been transferred to Fort Hood in April months ago and was very reluctant to be deployed to Iraq. &quot;We've known over the last five years that was probably his worst nightmare,&quot; he said.

Thinking about this story and other similar stories, I have come to the conclusion that religious belief, or at least one's interpretation of it and the emotions associated with religion are much more powerful than logic or any college education that money can buy. We of course do not know all the details but I am willing to bet this man is not a psycho. Time and again I have heard stories about college educated youths the world over going forward with these kinds of missions because they believe it serves a greater good and that they'll be richly rewarded for their actions in an after life. Of course I feel bad for any muslim serving in the army, those dudes already had a rough time of it, and are going to have it even rougher going forward. Would not want to be in their shoes.

Motivations for most of the world's wars can be traced to two sources, religion or greed, and who can sometimes tell where the two don't merge?

Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. I was at the gym working out when this came across the crawler, but could not hear the details, but a muslim connection came to my mind even before I got home to get the details. I also envisioned the Jihad group having a great nig old party over this one.

I think Muhammad Ali had the better idea, if it is so against your idioliogy and religion, DON'T GO.

He reinforced every stereotype many Americans have about Muslims, and yes, those Muslims serving in the military are in for a rough go of it.

If he is found guilty of pre-meditated murder and executed, no doubt he will become a martyr to Muslim extremist everywhere.
