The major was a psychiatrist who had been treating soldiers returning from Iraq for post-traumatic stress and alcohol and drug abuse problems.

&quot;He was making outlandish comments condemning our foreign policy and claimed Muslims had the right to rise up and attack Americans,&quot; Col Lee told Fox News.

&quot;He said Muslims should stand up and fight the aggressor and that we should not be in the war in the first place.&quot; He said that Maj Hasan said he was &quot;happy&quot; when a US soldier was killed in an attack on a military recruitment centre in Arkansas in June. An American convert to Islam was accused of the shootings.

Col Lee said that other officers had told him that Maj Hasan had said &quot;maybe people should strap bombs on themselves and go to Time Square&quot; in New York.

<span style="font-weight: bold">He said he was aware that the major had been subject to &quot;name calling&quot; during heated arguments with other officers.</span>

Maj Hasan's cousin Nader Husan said he was happy working for the military but did dread deployment to Iraq.

Mr Hasan said his cousin was a US-born Muslim who had joined the military after high school. He had served as a psychiatrist at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC, which treats many badly wounded troops.

What an odd state of affairs. It seems the Major Hasan should have been discharged long before it got to this, especially as he has been known to applaud when fellow soldiers are killed. What use is someone like that to his comrades in arms considering his views? In any case, he has done his fellow Muslims a grave disservice knowing how the majority in the US like to dehumanize, stigmatize, and stereotype &quot;others&quot;.

Rich, I am not sure what you are saying exactly. I don't even watch the media much....but most of the peeps I see, wonder why we are at war and wasting our resources (or putting them to ill use) while the economy is tanking at home. They are surviving a month at a time. ...and I see little energy left for any &quot;protest movements&quot; like back &quot;back in the day.&quot; I'm a little bit disheartened and angry at the same time. Yu know? nuff.

what im saying is that the loud voices int he media (liek those on the cable news channels and talk radio) portray Amrica a certain way..they are hawkish about war and american interventionism...hardlien on one side or the other. while the truth is that the vast majority of people just want to have a comfortable life with health and security for their families.

The guy is about to bust 40.

Who knows how long he’s been in the military.

Could be since he was 18 or 20 or 25, 30?

Could be he just signed up thinking of it as a way to get thru med school, pay for, etc ...

10 years ago, the world was a different place <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="color: #FF0000"><span style="font-size: 8pt">(good lord I hate that expression)</span></span></span> and no one thought the US would be in an actual war in Afghanistan, Iraq ... Joe the Plumber had no clue where Kabul is or what a burqa was.

When he enlisted, this guy prolly never dreamed he’d be in combat against his distant relatives.

A relative confirmed his death and said that his parents, Sheryll and Jeff, were trying to get some sleep after being up all night. <span style="color: #FF0000">Pfc. Pearson was the youngest of four children and joined the army a little more than a year ago</span>.

According to a post on the news Web site ChicagoBreakingnews.com, his mother said on Friday that Pfc. Pearson was training to learn how to deactivate bombs and <span style="color: #FF0000">had joined the military because “He was working for a furniture company and felt like he wasn’t going anywhere.” She added:
