Forgive me if I am wrong Yout, but the Oscars do award performances – right? Or are the Oscars about which film portrayed blacks in the worst light?

Why was Jamie Fox honored? Do you agree with that win? Did he win because he portrayed another “shady” black character in your opinion? What about Forest Whitaker, Sidney Poitier , Guba Jnr, Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Hudson – what Hollywood sinister reason did they have to honor those black actors?

Just trying to understand Hollyweird from your perspective

those people all won oscars? wow...
anyway i think denzel & halle won the first for best actor as opposed to best supporting actor, although i could be wrong;
so in the sense of being the first, i think those roles were suspicious...just as the first supporting actress win was for playing a fat mammy slave...
i think jaimie foxx deserved it, but i look at the portrayals in the movies- 'ray' had positive portrayals as well- and not only from light-skinned characters; i really did not see the negative portrayals of dark-skinned people in any of the people you mentioned's oscar wins;
in this movie, all the positive, normal, helpful people are more white-looking & i have a problem with that; the black father rapes his daughter & gives her aids and the dark-skinned mother is portrayed negatively as well...
the other day i was telling someone how in all of tyler perry's movies the bad guy is a brutal dark-skinned guy and the savior is usually a nice light-skinned guy;

then again if you compare the amount of black oscar winners compared to white, what would it be? like 0.001%?

most of them were negative roles...
the last king of scotland for which forest whitaker won was a disgusting filthy piece of trash..(which portrayed the african first lady as a slut ready to drop baggy for the first white guy that came along- a first lady!!! ) this is what they consider oscar-worthy...

the oscars are all politics anyway...i never rate them

Politrixs plays a role in this whole Oscar thing. Whoopi Goldberg's performance in the Color Purple was one of the best I have every seen and she did not win. The word was they do not like Steven Spielberg. Her performance is Ghost was "okay" but they gave it to her to make up for Color Purple.

Its just too easy for some black folks to paint everything in a cloak of racism. Its one defensive argument that in some cases hold no water.

Can yu imagine if the white race in an uproar because the Oscars honored Tom Hanks for playing a dumb retard name “Forest Gump”? NO I can’t imagine it. But I can imagine black folks licking out against the Oscars for honoring a black actor for playing a dumb retard name “Forest Gump”

J_yout - this is why I pointe out those actors that had positive portrayals that were honored. If I had followed your train of thought I would Believe that Hoolywood is only intrested in honoring "shady" , dark, not so pleasant black roles.

yes there is politics in the nomination/awards but I am not going to go as far to make it as sinsiter as you make it against black films/actors.

In agreement that Denzel should have won for X but I have to say playing that bad cop was soooo far out of his element that he scared the Jesas outta mi. Dat deh performance was good. I HATED Denzel the man (not the character) in that movie an dat noh easy fi mi fi do cause he is a likeable guy. He performed his rear end off in dat movie in my opinion

It just tore me up that Forest Gump was the big winner over one of my all time favourite films (The Shawshank Redemption) which IMHO was more worthy but Forest Gump was the "feel good movie that everyone admired, including the judges.

Since then I have learned not to get upset about who wins and who loses. Like Xavier says, it's all political anyway.

People give the Oscars far too much weight.

It's <span style="font-style: italic">alllllllllllll</span> political - I can I <span style="font-weight: bold">ASSURE</span> you.

And much like campaigning for political office these days, the shocking truth the public is unaware of, the Oscars is a deeply, financially driven process.

I know - I'm a voting member of the academy.

the people in "birth of a nation" were just actors too- yet that movie set back the black man in america 100 years when it came out- you are downplaying the power of art/media in society- also you are missing the point...
there have been about less than 10 black actors & actresses combined who have won oscars in the academy's entire history;
how many black films have won a best picture oscar?
the point is that white actors & directors have thousands of diverse films to choose from while black films and roles are extremely limited and even more so when hollyweird only chooses stereotypical or negative ones to boots up for oscars;
so in that sense it is not fair to compare black oscar winners with white...
hollyweird has a history of denigrating black film & actors so how can you compare then on the same plain?...
why have no black films ever been seriously considered for best picture?

when they nominate a "do the right thing" or an "ali" or "malcolm x" or "finding forrester" for best picture then i will stop being so suspicious of them...
when they nominate rakim's "paid in full" for first oscar rap song instead of "it's hard out here for a pimp" then i will remove my suspicion

I mnade an similar comments a few times.. you want to win an oscar mention African Slavery in the US , rape or the Holocaust...

Interestingly I made a comment on the number of British Black actors who have roles in the US.. Think Stringer Bell and compare the nuances with Avon in The Wire. .. It seems that there are African American actors cant be cast against a certain Stero type... Exceptions being Coutney Vance, Denzel, Jeffery Wright, ... They are black but can have a subtext of their ethnicity without being the sole defining attribute... Drop them in a role they play it...

I think Malcolm X made a comment once that you should judge a performace by seeing which African actor could play the part... Look at million dollar baby it had a major issue of race aand Xenophobia .. Could the principal roles be swtiched... Could Morgan Freeman play the Clint Role ???? Could say Maira carery play the Hillary shank role???

- Antwoine Fisher
- King of Scotland </span>

To name a few…

What I am not understanding is for the few that you and I can agree didn’t get their props, that shouldn’t discredit the fact that they have recognized some other good films with strong leading black roles. ...Yes and it goes without saying that the pickings of good black films are small (Funding is limited too). Surely yuh nat gwine to see Madea movies getting a nod and anything to do with Ray Ray and Tyrone Jenkins hanging around the “hood”. What yuh need fi do is praise the black writers and actors who a try bring more complex characters on the screen that dare not “camouflage” the real pains that exists in the black community – DARK as it may be.

Now you haven’t yet seen Precious..as far as you and I know the performances could be REVITING enought to warrant Oscar attention. Then for all the rave reviews , you are going to find that one sector of the black population who may very well be angry ifthis film does not get a nod and then you have another sector (you in that bunch) who a go blaze up gainst the nomination because the characters were not “white-like”. C’mon…. some things have got to give. WE cannot have it both ways
