I think Peter Tosh is much more rough aroudn the edges in his music than Bob was...imagine I was jamming to one of his tunes on XM the other day (was in the car with my girls) wen at the end of the song mi hear him buss out wid a big Rastacart! Now I was shocked cuz I really never expect to hear it and I would imagine back in those days it was much less acceptable than it is today. I don't think his fame came down to his complexion. People that I've met in places that know no other famous blacks, see Bob as black, for that matter - I have not met ANY so far, that knew that he was mixed (or half-white).
That aside, I think Bob Marley was one of the blessed few who had talent that spread a message that transcended most races.

If someone told me that he stole their lyrics AND their performance magnetism AND their spiritual expression AND their persona, then I will be willing to believe that he was propelled over a someone more deserving. But that is not possible, nor was it what happened.

I'm a stern Marley fan - much as I also appreciate that he has some negative (like the Mar..), I'm also a fan of other reggae stars, Burning spear, Gregory Isaacs, and some modern artists. But I think that their music will have a less wider appeal than Bob's, mainly because not as many people would identify with what.

Mi would haffi sey Bob was more due tuh music cross-over appeal, caa mi memba wen dem did ah struggle HARD, wen dem music was raw Jacan vibes. Locally dem was ah hit, an in di niche neighborhood clubs abroad, but internationally dem was really unknown until dem changed di sound tuh appeal tuh di American public. Memba him was doing some touring wid well known names fi gi him more exposure to di Black Merican crowd.

For example, personally, mi tink di first slower paced cut him made of &quot;Stir-It-Up&quot; was di best, but it neva caught on internationally until him rerecorded di song in di 70's.

Afta dat people start fi step back in time an start check out dem earlier stuff, an di original recordings.

'prophet' is a subjective thing...one man's prophet is another man's criminal;
jesus is a god to some christians, a prophet to some muslims and a regular man to some jews...all prophets in history have been human beings.

to many rastafari, marley is a prophet, full stop. just as garvey is also...

ras planno actually knew marley personally and spoke on him...ras planno said marley was prepared to do the works he did because they recognized he was given the tools needed to reach a broad audience...
if you study music, marley's music in my opinion is more catchy &amp; appealing sonically than most of tosh or bunny music &amp; no less militant;
marley used blackwell as much as blackwell used marley;
the man was driven and hard-working and determined to get his message out by any means necessary- malcolm x was lightskinned too- i guess that made him appeal to white people more than darksinned martin luther king??;
marley's stance was unequivocally african/black and he hailed the black man's god...he is revered in africa for his songs of black redemption &amp; upliftment;

I never rated his band though: too lightweight. Bob needed something heavier, like The Aggravators or Roots Radics, which unfortunately arrived later on the scene.

Maybe that's why my favourite 'message' group is Wailing Soul. After they left Studio One they were backed by Style Scott, Flabba Holt and the rest.

you have to keep in mind some songs are remixed for the foreign markets with lighter bass &amp; drums, more guitar, etc.

i remember that song in my yute days...it was big in j-a;
i would liken bob to shabba ranks and peter to ninjaman in the late 80's to early 90's...
ninja was the more raw &amp; local...but shabba got the international exposure due to the fact he made better records &amp; had more 'star' appeal in my opinion...a lot of things factor into who is more successful commercially...it's an overall marketing campaign, but at the end of the day it boils down to music...and if the people don't buy your records no amount of marketing can help you...no matter your looks or shade
