Maybe if some of those beatings were still allowed in schools more teachers would be subjected to a bullet to their forehead after school.
As I stated before,the beatings in school is merely a reflection of the violence in the wider society,there were no regulations about what was allowed and what wasnt,I had a head teacher beat me with her fist,my maths teacher was a particular nasty piece of work,she left weals all over my back,I still think she got off sexually on beating boys with her belt.
It is ludicrious to think that beatings in school would not lead to killings and violence,in my opinion it leads to a more violent society,its not schools that should be responsible for discipline,that should start in the home,violence in jamaica is as a result of other societal problems like break down in the family structure,,poverty,and lack of resources for young people. </div></div>

Teachers fail to teach.. because they are incompent due to poor train lack of resources and they hit children to cover.. And who are the normal victims of their aggression those less competent, those less inspited...They hot without anlaysi why children were failing.. Thus there is no onous on them to improve, to change. They are inflexible as it was the first and only censure they had .. They simply hit the victims...And we have as a part of our culuter ????

I dont know what the training criteria is now for teachers,but back in the days when I was a schoolboy in ja the training was very limited,someone would leave comprehensive school and a few months later the same person would appear as a teacher.

I remember Mico Teachers' College...most of those who taught me in Primary school went to St. Joseph's College...which was a 3 year programme.

In Infant school we didn't get flogged...*chukkle* but in Primary school, di nuns mek di chirrens faawt wid caning.

Until recently they still did that in Catholic schools across America. My Irish friend would tell us horror stories of what she went through in Ireland in RC school [no pun intented].. so I think it was a part of their curriculum..how to beat pupils..

One teacher had flogged my brother mercilessly to the extent that Mom went to her house...and almost call police pan har.. Shi did name Ms Kahtah....she was a mean SOB..

Regretfully to say, a boy who a nun had caned, came back and sliced up her face with a razor...I heard there was so much blood everywhere....since then, soon aftah, the nuns never returned to that school...this is before West Kingston became what it is now...childhood is our formative years; very crucial part of our emotional development...considering all the beatings that have occurred globally...no wonder there is so much violence from generation to generation...people acting out their repressed anger on the wrong ones...I kid you not...<span style="font-style: italic">Hitler mussie did get some rohs licks</span>..

I watched a comedy sketch once where the guy said in jamaica if someone doesnt know somthing you beat it into them,I laughed but now I know it isnt funny at all for the victims.

i remember...
seems so long ago- i wonder what is the situation nowadays; never had any really bad beatings...took some caning to the hands...

i saw far greater abuse on children from parents....

some parents in j-a took beating kids way too zealously...
it's true-- violence became engrained in the society over time...
it's an issue they must seriously examine...

When I was about 10, I suffered mercilessly at the hands of a teacher who took a particular dislike to me. One day she decided to cane the entire class. We were to stand at our desks, hold out our hands, and she would whip each child in each hand with the cane. I was so furious with her. I don't know where this anger sprung up from within me

When she got to me, I grabbed the cane and told her she dared not hit me. I was gritting my teeth. I don't know what came over me but I was not letting go of that cane! The teacher was so shocked. Some of the other children in the classroom began to sob and they weren't even caned yet! The teacher told me to let go of the cane, find my way at once to the principal's office and don't ever come back to her classroom again. I was devastated! I had yet to sit the Common Entrance. My life was over!

My mother was called to the school. Somehow the issue was resolved and I was allowed back into that woman's classroom although my mom kept me home for a day. That teacher never acknowledged my presence again. It took some years for me to get over that trauma - the physical abuse was one thing, but the mental abuse was another.

When I first held my baby in my arms, I remember thinking, if anyone dare to hit or hurt this child in any way, I would surely kill them

my experience was similar mass hitting of class by teachers was a weekly occurance....it was feared.. There is a scream of terror that girls gave that i imagine was common curreny in the slave yard..

personally I was the target of rascist abuse by teachers.... Dunce dundus, dunce coolie, ugly arawak no wonder yu people ded out was common currency.. u parents nyam snails, And that was the teachers.. I was struck on a near daily basis.. Frankly there was a physical issue that any teacjer worth their salt should have picked up.. rulers in hand, kunk on head, strap on the back and it was accompanied by comments on about my parents... and being told they would bring back the cow cod that was used in their youth.. that they were too soft... Yet this was a school that for its entire history had one student who passed the common entrance or any other gate way exam.....Till our arrival....I had a brother who was quite frankly a bloody genius.. who had the intelect the size of a small planet....who after three months passed the exam to the technical high schooll.. Which shows the stupidity of the Jamaican system.. Here was a kid who could explain the Euripides, speak three languages, understood the relationship between roman and colonial hence Jamaican law.. but could not swing a machete or screw a screw is the least coordinated person I know is placed in a Technical High school with a focus on technical skills...

My point is St ***** all age school had a devastating unregulated system of punishment yet in the period from 68 to 88 a period of 20 years had a total of 7 students who passed a gate way examination..Let me be generous assuming a annul cohort of 40....that is 7 students out of 800 less than 1 % had... There were two schools I know with similar records. .If I then look around the parish I could identify similar schools with similar records so I know this is not isolated.. Until the 80's the fact that there was less than 10% passing basic literacy and numerasy in Jamaica was not seen as an issue.. The fact Jamaican education success is inspite of the teachers..

I would wager that the prep schools private schools and schools around urban centers where there was not this unregulated barbaric practices had more success at the gate way exams....

Dont get this wrong I know I was targeted.. but I noted the children of teachers were sacrosant, the children of shop keepers were never touched, the children of those people who worlked at alpart were not touched..(they soon left to go to Prep School).. My issue that the victims of this abuse was those who did not attend school regularly, those children on the perifery of society and those students who were blacker than the rest...

I know that there are limited resources and that the CEE was a pscologically damaging period for every child.. with displaced hope.. <span style="font-weight: bold">Yet failure at these gate way exams was not seen as teh fault of the teachers or the system inability to deliver it was squarely placed on the victims. the children</span>.

that aint lovem that aint caring, that is cruety, brutality and stupidity... If there is a hell I want every single teacher who hit a child as a means of teaching to be in the deepest darkest corner....

Is it a surprise that Jamaican are overwhelmingly rely on violent acts as means of solution.

They seem to have had teachers who were more adept at battering the class than at educating them.
the parents being the product of the same torture process masquerading ans education , supported it to a great extent.
