If he was white now, he would have been speculation that he was mental,even before they know the real history.

SEATTLE - Authorities believe the man sought in the slaying of four police officers is still alive and has been <span style="font-weight: bold">aided by a network of friends and family,</span> a police spokesman said Monday night.

Officers surrounded a house in the Seattle suburb of Renton Monday evening, the second time in two days police had circled a home in their search for suspected cop killer Maurice Clemmons. Police questioned residents who may have aided the suspect since the Sunday morning shootings, Pierce County Sheriff's office spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Officers believe Clemmons was shot in the abdomen during the attack on the officers at a Parkland coffee shop. The 37-year-old may have received medical help and money from friends or family, Troyer said. <span style="font-weight: bold">And police believe some of those questioned have misled investigators to help Clemmons remain at large, he said.</span>
Police are certain Clemmons was in a Seattle house on Sunday night, but was able to flee before police could contain the area. Police staked out that house overnight before SWAT team members determined early Monday that Clemmons wasn't there.

Clemmons has had access to handguns, rifles and shotguns, Troyer said.

"It's unfortunate he's been a step or two ahead of us."

Monday morning's realization that the suspect had not been cornered after all prompted police to fan out across the city, looking for any sign of Clemmons. Authorities posted a $125,000 reward for information leading to his arrest in the Sunday morning shooting rampage.

The manhunt came as authorities in two states took heat for the fact that Clemmons was allowed to walk the streets despite a teenage crime spree in Arkansas that landed him an 108-year prison sentence. He was released early after then-Gov. Mike Huckabee commuted his sentence.

Police said they are not sure what prompted Clemmons to assassinate the officers as they worked on their laptop computers at the beginning of their shifts. He was described as increasingly erratic in the past few months and had been arrested earlier this year on charges that he punched a sheriff's deputy in the face.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer told the Tacoma News-Tribune that Clemmons indicated the night before the shooting "that he was going to shoot police and watch the news."</span>
Authorities said the gunman singled out the officers and spared employees and other customers at the coffee shop in a suburb about 35 miles south of Seattle. He then fled, but not before he was apparently shot in the torso by one of the dying officers.

Police later learned he may have been holed up at the house in Seattle. <span style="font-weight: bold">After an all-night siege in which they tried to get him out using loudspeakers, explosions and a robot sent into the house, a SWAT team stormed the place and discovered he was not there.</span>

Police spent the rest of the day frantically chasing leads, visiting hundreds of locations as they followed up on tips, at one point cordoning off a park where people thought they saw Clemmons. They also alerted hospitals to be on the lookout for a man seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.

SEATTLE -- KIRO 7 has confirmed that Maurice Clemmons is dead.

Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said the suspected killer of four Lakewood police officers was shot in a confrontation with Seattle police early Tuesday morning.

The officer-involved shooting happened on S. Kenyon St. in Rainier Valley.

Neighbors tell KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Rick Price they were woken up by gunshots around 2:30 a.m.

Streets in the area are still blocked off.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Chris Francis reports that officers gathered at Harborview Medical Center after Clemmons was transported there.

The Seattle shooting came just hours after police and SWAT teams busted into a Renton duplex Monday evening where Clemmons' niece lives.

Destiny Hinton told KIRO 7 in an exclusive interview that she hasn't seen her uncle in at least a month.

Hinton says police were searching the wrong place when they broke a window and burst into her neighbor's apartment.

Video shown on KIRO 7 shows broken furniture, glass, and various items strewn across the floor inside the apartment.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Deborah Horne watched officers tow a car away from the scene.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer says a network of family and friends is helping Clemmons hide.

Troyer says they've provided him money, places to stay, and done things to distract law enforcement.

Relatives that spoke to KIRO 7 deny these accusations.

Police scrambled to numerous possible sightings of Clemmons as the manhunt intensified after a SWAT team came up empty-handed in a raid on a home in Seattle's Leschi neighborhood where he was thought to be holed up.

Officers with search dogs went door to door, police watched bus and train terminals, and state troopers monitored freeways in the massive search for Clemmons, who police said suffered a gunshot wound to the torso during the shooting.

Police sources said evidence found at the Leschi home indicated he was still bleeding badly when he arrived there.

A reported sighting of Clemmons brought a large police response to the University of Washington, where police found a man who "slightly resembled" Clemmons.

Heavily armed officers with a K-9 searched a homeless encampment known as the jungle in Jose Rizal Park, then went to the International District where bloody bandages were found on the street.

Another possible sighting came when someone reported seeing Clemmons on a Metro bus at Fourth Avenue and James Street in downtown Seattle. Police impounded the bus to check for traces of blood from the wounded suspect, although no blood was visible, said King County sheriff's spokesman John Urquhart.

Clemmons had stayed on the run for nearly two days with help from a network of friends and family who gave him places to stay, medical aid, rides and money, police said. On Monday, officers detained a sister of Clemmons who they think treated the 37-year-old suspect's gunshot wound.

"We believe she drove him up to Seattle and bandaged him up," Troyer said.

Police believe people close to Clemmons have misled officers, and Troyer said anyone helping him could face charges. Clemmons' sister wasn't in custody late Monday, and her name wasn't released.</span>

Funny, in a strange disgusting kind of way. I see sympathy for the cold blooded killer/child molester with a rap sheet a mile long. I see none for the four human beings that were MURDERED for simply being police officers.

Me thinks the real story here is that race relations and trust is as bad or worse then it has ever been. (evidence by most of the responses I've read)

If the four police officers were black and the killer was white, this topic would have taken a different course?

I think you miss the point this is not about sympathy for someone who did something wrong ...No one was taking away from the fact that four people died (innocence was not questioned). If the man's mental health was taken into consideration he would not have been on the street and have access to a weapon and those 4 officers would probably be alive. While it is wrong when a sick person commits an office what is being done to help the sick?

As it relates to race the white dude with similar problems would probably be getting treatment so it would have been a sane person committing the act ... 2 different scenarios.
