That said, I believe we have too many "police officers" who are psychologically damaged and immature and who became police so that they could bully others. Most are good, many are not. Snowballs do not require an armed response. Police officers have a difficult job, so do many other people. Just being a police officer does not confer hero status. Also, a police officer, or anyone with a weapons permit, should not draw a weapon unless he/she intends to shoot... and the only time you shoot, is to kill. Besides that these people complaining don't even know 14th street. Like I said right down the street is a big school where they could have thrown snowballs until their arms dropped off. They had no business throwing on opposite sides of the street.

What do you suggest he should have done, snapped his windshield wiper off of his truck and used that? People are short tempered anyway, just suppose some snowball had hit the wrong somebody. This person could have shot and killed a whole lot of folks for what? The sake of a good time.

There didn't seem to be anyone's life in immediate danger <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-size: 8pt">(please correct if I'm wrong guys) </span></span>so, how about returning to his car and waiting for backup or using his bull horn?

There's a police station not 1 chain from this said corner - couldn't have taken more than 5 or 7 minutes for his colleagues to arrive.

I started this thread and have not been back to comment. The feeling I had on the morning that I posted it and used the title I did....was that snowball fights,when I was growing up, were good clean fun in the pure driven snow. I'm sorry for mistakes on both sides....that people took it too far, and that an officer, whatever his color, saw fit to draw a gun as defense against.....SNOWBALLS.

It is so sad that the times have changed so many things that are decent memories into something else then again now. (yeah I know, start violin music here)

Lord I remember the days in High School when a pack of us would get together and pelt the crap outta anything that moves,

I can remember a woman getting out of her car and was met with a barage of snowballs, we just saw it as harmless fun and yes we could have injured someone.

There is a larger sociopolitical context to this incident that no one is mentioning either because they are unaware of it or because it may be seen as unnecessarily divisive.

The U Street corridor is one of those enclaves within a majority black city that has been “taken over “ by young white professionals. The gentrification of this area has been the subject of much analysis in DC.

Now take a careful look at the video and look at who is participating in this snowball fight. Into this activity comes a Hummer, a vehicle that many in this kind of crowd have a problem with. Some have said that this may even have been why it was singled out for being pelted to the degree that it was.

But then out jumps a Black man who is obviously upset. He is obviously not having "fun" at this point. So what do these young white geniuses do instead of saying hey, this could get out of hand, let’s stop for a moment and behave like adults, maybe even help him with his stuck Hummer like we did the other motorists ?

They pelt him with snowballs and begin to taunt him when they see the gun.

And after he confronts them, <span style="text-decoration: underline">AND BEGINS TO WALK AWAY</span>, what do these yuppies do? They pelt him with snowballs again.

This is not "fun". This is, in my opinion, nothing more than another example of the type of arrogance of the entitled who have moved into this area that has made long term Black residents of the area resent them.

There is a lot of blame to go around. But there is subtext here that should not be ignored.

the kind of disrespect these 'kids' showed toward an officer with a gun is amazing...i can't tell what exactly happened to cause it or if he was justified in brandishing a weapon...but i do know
in certain 'hoods this type of back-talking & snowball throwing at an officer would have resulted in almost certain gunfire or brutality by officers...
unless the camera caused him to not kick some arse

that was the general feeling of the crowd. i dont know if this is the one that was organized on twitter/facebook, but the "off duty" cop jumped outa his car and start gwaan bummy

him lucky a "uniformed cop" nevah accidentally shot him \0/

I have moved from DC since 1999, and just recently drove through 14th street. I was shocked how many yuppies like "Rollin Calf has stated" have just moved in. They raised the rents so high, most can't afford it so they are forced to moved out. Since they've moved in all kinds of renovations have been made.

Nothing is fun about the situation.

And yes to J_yout comments about the lack of respect the kids showed him after he identified himself as a Cop. Dem shoulda lack up dem baxide ... Yuh can meet fi trow snowball and have good fun yes indeed but why are you throwing them on a person's vehicle??? No one person in this thread would find that amusing had it happen to them.

Snowball fight to mi should be aimed at the [willing] PEOPLE in the fight. And if you pelt smaddy an dem object to it and ask that you not throw annything at them - then you ought to respect that wish as well. It got way out of hand ..not anything close to a "clean fun" snowball fight at all

What yuppies have moved into 14th St and U? Do you mean young white people? Well, yes. But don't make it sound like it is wealthy young white people who have 'gentrified' the area pushing out blacks. C'mon now

Sure, there are some funky (in a good way) folks buying into the area particularly as the city became priced out of their range. The area continues to maintain its local DC character and flavor, while new alternative and some Black/Latino/Ethiopian/Trini have opened up new businesses: Cake Love, Twins Jazz, Busboys and Poets, etc.

As a 25-year resident of DC and downtown Silver Spring, I've seen U Street Corridor change. But it ain't uppity like Dupont Circle or Georgetown. It is a cool hang. Very much like it was (I imagine) when it was the local scene of DC back in the day.

Now back to the snowball fight ... let's hope another Beer Summit does not take place here as a result
