Thank God no deaths. This morning's news is reporting mostly minor injuries to the upper body of injured passengers.

Thankfully the plane was at the end of the runway, so it shouldn't have been going very fast.

One news report mentioned something about a wet runway.

AMR Corp.'s American Airlines told federal officials that the impact of the accident broke the Boeing 737's fuselage in three different places, according to one person familiar with the details. The airline also indicated there were preliminary reports of four people hospitalized with broken bones, but no life-threatening injuries, according to this person. One of the pilots apparently suffered a broken arm.

The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to announce it will send a team of investigators to the scene.

Fort Worth-based American spokesman Tim Smith said Wednesday that &quot;both engines were removed or taken off the wing as it happened,&quot; as designed to do for safety reasons. The aircraft crashed through a fence at the end of the runway and ended up partly on a roadway, he said.

The carrier was still checking injury reports and intends to issue an update later Wednesday.

Flight 331 reportedly went through turbulence and thunderstorms on the way from Miami to Norman Manley International Airport in Jamaica's capital. One passenger was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that there was turbulence during the trip, and the plane seemed to bounce or skid after touchdown.

The airport reopened early Wednesday after officials had delayed flights because of concerns that the plane's tail might be hindering visibility. Some 400 passengers waited for their flights to be cleared for takeoff, Security Minister Dwight Nelson told Radio Jamaica.

In recent years, planes running off the end of runways have become the most frequent type of commercial airline accidents around the world.</div></div>

naah not always... from what I notice, they (authorities backed by the airlines $$$$$$) always TRY to make it pilot error, and they actually always try to get the pilot to at least share the blame, but sometime its equipment.

I agree.
It so ridiculous when u hear the news reports specculate &quot;could it have been weather that contributed to the crash.&quot; (CNN doing just that now ).
Of course the rain contributed to the conditions, but the pilot are trained to operate a plane asorn to the weather conditions.
This is a tropical county, whey dem expected??
SAME way how when wi have snow fall them sey &quot;drive as per conditions&quot;, said way dem fi fly and land as per conditions.

That said, still nuh rule out equipment failure, cause one report sey the landing gear collasped.
Deh again, could be after it overshot the runway still..

Are you concerned that they were cleared top land in these conditions?

I mean it is just rain.
What should the controllers do?
tell them to try Montego bay, or probably refuel them in the air and allow them to go to Cuba, or maybe circle around above the storm until awhn it is over??
They could go to Cuba, or Puerto Rico, Haiti or even Cayman.
The only problem is that it was a stationary front that encompassed just about overhear i listed.?

Not to mention that the whole area is under torrential rains from the golf of Mexico to the Windward Islands.

I mean is that a specimen of the US or Jamaican education system or what??
