oxymoron. if u learn to read and write in one language, u are literate. because u cannot read and write in another language separate to ur own, it does not make u illiterate. that would be like saying i'm illiterate because i can read and write english but not portuguese.

When I visit China I am as illiterate as any illiterate Chinese.
I have to go by the signs, and still miss my exit on the highways.

Well guess what??
patwa is still english that gas been slanged so much for so long that it seem to be another language, But it is just Hyper-slanged English.
That's all, the accentand the hyper-slang, make it unrecognizable, but it is not another language any more that ebonics is another language.
It is only older,that's all.

#3 the verbage inner city youths speak is still English...its slang that they use that makes it difficult for some to understand what they are saying. slang is different everywhere...doesnt make it sound like a foreign language since they are using English words. its just the order in which they use it that can make it hard to undertand unlike patwa where there are some obvious words that are totally different and are not English. </div></div>

i've had to school people where i work who want to call highly educated professionals &quot;illiterate&quot; because they do not have facility in english.

I don't choose it.
If i wanted to be literate in that language I would have to go to school just like any other illiterate.
Ther is no other way of describing it.
It is the truth.
