Today, the thought of vacationing in the devastated country of Haiti seems obscene. But as donations pour in to help rebuild Haiti, perhaps those with means should consider vacationing there in the future. It may be one of the most helpful steps in the long run.</span>

It's used as the ship people's perfect little island fantasy bbq cook out day. No one even sees many real people, only the select few who are allowed to work there.

You'd have no conception of what is happening across that mountain.

My understanding is the cruise line rents the area from the gov. like one big asssed picnic.

Haiti used to have a great cruise shipping industry it was cried down by the so-called lovers of Haiti. The ships left and rented a few little private beaches around Hispaniola.
I am sure that will be the target for the next round of exploitation arguments.

Well the times I was there, I just saw some folks eating and swimming, sunning, and buying some crafts getting back on the ship and leaving.

I am indifferent to this one. Many questions went through my mind. With what happened should tourist be visiting this island? What should the people who live on that island and make their living off tourist do? Will this visit make these tourists empathize with the Haitian people? At what point does the almighty dollar not override everything? How are they to recover if there is not attempt to a sense of normalcy? If one ship goes will others follow? I

t is especially tough when you think about the money someone may not be getting to feed their children or help someone on the mainland because this ship did not go...

As for the content of the post - there's another thread here from mid '07 on the matter. I'll look for that and post it as well. I shared my thoughts on this in depth.

What is disgusting to me - as I said, <span style="font-weight: bold">I<span style="color: #FF0000">M</span>HO</span> - is that the cruise lines, this one and most of them, are very hypocritical.

I can't beat that horse again but basically, my feeling: the company says, continuing to port is their way of supporting the economy, etc, etc.

<span style="font-weight: bold">I<span style="color: #FF0000">M</span>HO</span>, the<span style="font-weight: bold"> <span style="text-decoration: underline">nation</span></span> of Haiti benefits very, very little from the Labadie ships.
