Prof. Rex Nettleford heart attack in Washington, DC

Just got this through a DC friend:

Jan. 28, 2010. Prof Nettleford had a heart attack in Washington...his heart stopped and was restarted by paramedics---he is in ICU and remains unconscious. Later news is hopeful, he apparently has regained consciousness, and can apparently recognize people.

Anyone heard?

Professor Rex Nettleford hospitalized

Professor Rex Nettleford, vice-chancellor emeritus at the University of the West Indies has been admitted to a Washington based hospital in the United States.

A source close to the family has confirmed that Professor Nettleford collapsed during a meeting yesterday and was later hospitalized.

The Gleaner Power 106 News has also been informed that his doctors locally are now consulting with medical personnel overseas as to how to proceed with his treatment.

Rex Nettleford is the recipient of Jamaica’s third highest honour, the order of Merit and is a cultural advisor to the prime minister.

He graduated from the University of the West Indies with honours in History and as a Rhode Scholar from Oxford University with postgraduate studies in Politics

He’s also the author of several publications including, “Manley and the New Jamaica”, “ The African Connexion” and “In Our Heritage”.

His latest published book is “Caribbean Cultural Identity, the case of Jamaica”.
