I heard him from his own mouth admitting, that he was advising Micheal Menlie in the 70s. He said it was one of his proudest moments. We all know what happened in the 70s right?
Anyway he did good for himself he had a Dance Group and eventually became he of the UWI a little while after. Never mind the economy tanked and human rights (which was one of his claim to fame) suffered.

He expalined that he had advised Menlie on the non aligned movement and I think I am not sure the IMF but certainly the Non-Alinged Movement and other stuff. It is a recurring decimal on this board. You for instance don't know that Rex was and adviser. you don't know in which capacity he was an adviser all you wish to do is somehow limit the perceived damage to his reputation.
Go find out how many boards he had sat on in his lifetime, find out the range and scope of the activities on those boards and see if he was not integral in the formation of Economic, Social and Cultural polices of the Governments with which he consulted with and advised.

The very Chancellorship of the UWI should answer all the questions in that regard, as it was at the Intellectual Ghetto where the Comrades found their most ardent supporters and Consultants, even to this day.

he has been called on by both parties when they felt his expertise was needed....as to his personal allegiance when voting, it has always been thought to be the PNP...

at any rate, he is a Jamaican thru and thru and who proved dat his state of birth was not his state of mind and he rose from low beginnings to the heights of height

hush wahalla. don't want to speak for peasie, but i don't think she really has an issue with your right to express your opinion, lol.

i don't think the respect folks are (trying) to offer rex nettleford's memory amounts to an attempt at a cult of personality. it's more that the man has made some significant contribution to culture in jamaica, and for some reason, that is not good enough to offer him honour in death. he is being judged on the consultancies and boards he sat on - positions which i think are distributed by governments of all stripes to people of already measurable achievement and reputation.

when u say he wasn't a great ideas man - i'm interested in hearing from you more on that. to conceptualize and realize a dream of jamaica's cultural expression in dance and make it known around the world - to some of us that is an example of a man of ideas. plus vannie has mentioned some other of his accomplishments.

LOL you keep saying the same thing, just as Evanovich keep saying. I have hours of tape now just from today that says differently. It is nice to reason with members for years and years on these boards who don't really follow what is going on in Jamaica, update their knowledge or knew jack what they are talking about from jump street.

Remember this is man I knew not just from the brief time I spent taking lessons from him but from the many endeavours that he was head cook and bottle washer at. Gee he was a Political Scientist that was his major at Oxford, not Dance!

Please let's stop because I was only interested in pointing out that beyond dance and so-called culture his work like many of the cabal that he was a part of did not advanced Jamaican Citizens,, rather the whole taken together put us behind in the race.

Among the many things they dabbled in was the Labour Relations. The Comrades wanted to control the big companies to do so they must elevate Labour and the Unions and put some intellectual muscle behind it. I think the department under Extra-Mural was called the Trade Union Education Institute.
Rex was the Chairman and eventually it elevated him to the ILO.

<span style="color: #660000">THE JAMAICA Productivity Centre (JPC) launched its inaugural annual Productivity Summary Report in November last year. The report covers the period 1972-2007. Subsequent reports will cover the most recent five-year periods. The JPC wishes to publicly acknowledge the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) for providing the primary data required for the report.

The productivity of the Jamaican worker, that is, the output per worker, has declined, on average, by 1.3 per cent per annum between 1972 and 2007. This means the average worker in Jamaica has been producing less, each year, over the period.

The wealth created by those involved in production must be shared with others in the population who are too young, too old, or for other reasons, are unable to participate in the production process. Over the period 1972-2007, the population has grown. This, combined with a declining output from the average worker, implies that the amount of wealth enjoyed by the average citizen has fallen, that is, the average Jamaican is poorer in 2007 than he/she was in 1972.

While labour productivity in Jamaica has been on the decline over the last three decades, many of our Latin American and Caribbean neighbours have experienced labour-productivity growth averaging more than 1.5 per cent per annum over the same period.

In the five-year period, 2003-2007, labour-productivity growth in Latin America and the Caribbean have accelerated to over two per cent per annum, while the output produced by a Jamaican worker declined by 1.8 per cent, on average. Over time, this has led to a widening of the labour-productivity gap and, in fact, some countries in the Caribbean such as St Lucia, that were behind Jamaica in labour productivity as late as 2002, are now ahead and moving even farther. Given the relationship between labour productivity and standard of living, this means the average citizen in the English-speaking Caribbean, over the period 2003-2007, was becoming richer than his/her Jamaican counterpart.</span>


<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">1973-1977, not agood year for labour</span>

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">The report also examines performance at five-year intervals in the Jamaican economy. It revealed that the period 1973-1977 had the highest decline of labour productivity, which was 5.8 per cent per annum.</span> <span style="color: #990000">During this period, output levels were falling by 3.5 per cent per annum while employment was increasing by 2.4 per cent per annum. The next five-year period, 1978-1982, recorded the next worst performance for labour productivity, a decline of 2.7 per cent per annum. In this period, output declined by 0.9 per cent while employment grew by 1.9 per cent.</span>

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">The best labour-productivity performance of 2.1 per cent per annum was observed in the period 1988-1992.</span> <span style="color: #660000">During this period, output growth of 3.5 per cent was faster than the 1.4 per cent growth in employment levels. This was the only five-year period where the growth in labour productivity exceeded one per cent per annum. In fact, only one other five-year period exhibited an improvement in labour productivity and this was between 1998 and 2002, 0.5 per cent per annum</span>
