LOL amazing you are putting words into my mouth as usual and answering them?
I never said i relied on his speeches I merely mentioned one or two things he has said or more importantly not said, since the counter to my arguments was reference to his books. Which is a joke because as the denizens of the intellectual ghetto remind Jamaicans many times, we an oral society. So if anything it would be what came out of the man's mouth that we would naturally pay more attention to not what is hidden away in some lofty tome..

I have been accused on this <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">Board and others</span> as been a Labourite. This the first thing most Jamaicans draw for. I have explained myself 100 + 1 times.

I am a PNP supporter, was always a PNP supporter and possibly will die one. I wrote my first argument against the Leadership of the PNP in 1977.

I have been against the Leadership of the PNP since Micheal Menlie won the 1972 elections and encouraged his goons to destroy Businesses owned by Jamaicans because they were White, Chinese, Indians or Rich.

Jamaican Hall Of Fame: Rex Nettleford

Born on February 3, 1933 in Falmouth, Jamaica, Rex Nettleford was a leading Caribbean intellectual and visionary. He was often referred to as a &quot;Third World Scholar&quot;. During his life, Nettleford nurtured his sensibilities into being more creative. His vivid imagination urged him to become more interested in the daily workings of the Caribbean country lifestyle. He observed their religious practices, music patterns and dialects. Due to his scrutinization of the country life and their cultural persistence, he was able to create his own ideas to convey the Caribbean Identity.

Rex Nettleford attended Cornwall College in Montego Bay, and earned a degree in History at the prestigious University Of The West Indies in London. He later became a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. Although, Nettleford was very educated he remained loyal to promoting Jamaican culture and social mores. He continued his committment by working closely with Caribbeans to explore the realities of their cultural development in daily living. His art, such as writings and choreograpies, unleashed his creative power by expressing the struggles of people in the Caribbean regions.

In his works, Rex Nettleford describes how the quest for identity can form a crux where citizens have to come to terms with their heritage and the discomfort it sometimes creates. While exploring the Caribbean self image, he formulated his own ideas regarding the hybridization and creolisation of the Caribbean people. He discovered their willingness to &quot;buy&quot; into the mixture of races and half-identification; therefore creating a fragmented view of their own identities. His first publication, &quot;Mirror, Mirror, Race, Identity and Protest in Jamaica (1970), explains Jamaican Society and the apprehensions they have towards their identities.

Nettleford became an advocate of Higher Education which prompted him to become Founder of The Trade Union Education Institute. An organization which allowed factory and farm workers to unite with scholars to help bridge the education gap between the classes. In 1963, he became the Co- Founder, Artistic Director, Choreographer and Lead Dancer, for the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica. He used this forum to introduce several religions to Jamaica, such as, Kumina and Pocomania. The stage became the arena where he debuted these movements and practices. Nettleford believed that the Arts fostered cultural survival, awareness of self and social change.

Mr. Nettleford received several awards during the course of his career. In 1975, he received The National Honor of Order of Merit (O.M.), The Gold Musgrave Medal from The Institute of Jamaica and The Living Legend Award from The Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, USA. In 1994, he received the Zora Neale Hurston-Paul Robeson Award for Outstanding Scholarly Achievment from The National Council for Black Studies, USA.

Rex Nettleford's career can be summed up by saying that he was a pioneer who sought Cultural Definition and Artistic Discoveries.

The entire University of the West Indies community is devastated by the loss of the colossal Caribbean cultural icon, Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford.

Save for the three years he spent as a Rhodes Scholar at Oriel College, Oxford, Rex Nettleford has lived his entire adult life at and for The University of the West Indies.

This life-long association with UWI began in 1953 when he entered the then University College of the West Indies to read for a degree in History. He returned immediately after completing the MPhil in Political Science at Oxford and, at the prompting of UWI Founding Father, Sir Philip Sherlock, took up the challenge of widening the reach of the still fledgling institution through the Department of Extra-Mural Studies, which took him to Trinidad and Guyana as Staff Tutor for the Eastern Caribbean.

Nettleford’s life has been seamlessly intertwined with that of the University of the West Indies. At every stage in the growth and development of the institution his quiet, self-effacing leadership could be discerned. He served in this way five Vice Chancellors – Sir Arthur Lewis; his mentor, Sir Philip Sherlock; Sir Roy Marshall, Mr A.Z. Preston and Sir Alister McIntyre – until he himself took up the mantle in 1998. Even after his official ‘retirement’ in 2004 Professor Nettleford continued to serve in the capacity of Vice-Chancellor Emeritus, Professor of Cultural Studies and unofficial advisor to current Vice-Chancellor, Professor E. Nigel Harris.
His intellectual gifts and wise counsel have been generously shared with many heads of Government, not only in Jamaica, but throughout the Caribbean and beyond. Professor Nettleford has been consulted by just about every Government in the Caribbean region (including the non-English speaking countries) and has served in an advisory capacity to several international organisations, including CARICOM, the Organisation of American States, UNESCO, the ILO, the World Bank and the International Development Research Council (IDRC) of which he is a founding director. His gift of erudition, combined with his inability to decline appeals for contributions of his talent in this area, resulted in his maintenance of a speaking schedule that would daunt normal mortals. He has written several books and contributed chapters to many more. The texts of his speeches, covering a wide range of topics, provide enough material for many more fine books.

Although Rex Nettleford is perhaps best known for his genius as a dancer and choreographer – he was co-founder and Artistic Director of the acclaimed National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica – it is as an intellectual and academic leader that the University has known him. He has been conferred with numerous academic honours from many universities and received from the Government of Jamaica the highest national award which a civilian can earn – The Order of Merit. He is recipient of the Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC); the Gold Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica, of which he was also named Honorary Fellow; The Chancellor’s Medal (UWI); the UWI Alumni Pelican Award; The Living Legend Award from the Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, USA and The Zora Neal Hurston/Paul Robeson Award from the National Council for Black Studies, among many others.

The Rhodes Trust, in celebration of its Centenary in 2004, established the Rex Nettleford Prize in Cultural Studies, tenable at The University of the West Indies – a fitting and lasting accolade which will ensure that his name and work will live on in perpetuity. Rex Nettleford’s life and career were indeed co-terminus with the University of the West Indies and he will never, never be forgotten.

LOL no one is trying to disparage Rex. This convo started before he was dead. I said all I wanted to say before then....until of course I got accused of chit.

You win on that score I was relying on for the date on a Rex worshipper that said the extra-mural Department was established for him. She was never corrected. I forgot that University had held the famous reasoning's with the dreads before he got there.

In any case it does not bother my argument that here is a clear case that something outside of Dance, which fell under his portfolio filed miserably.
I know what will follow and I am ready for it.

Actually I did refer to the UWI as a Ghetto......I don't want to say before Wilmot Perkins because I grew up listening to him and no doubt he had some influence of might have subconsciously supplied the actually word....but I did reach my conclusions independently of Wilmot and for the very same reasons that I heard him explain.

In most civilised countries Universities are centers of learning, innovation and change. the University of the West Indies at Mona have been relied upon by all iterations of Comrade Governments yet it has zero to show for it.

Yes there are many brilliant scholars that have passed through its doors and possibly some remaining, but the UWI has had a very negative effect on Jamaican politics, culture and economy. It has supplied the intellectual muscle for some of Jamaica's most backward expeditions into self-destruction.

Well i am talking about Jamaica and specifically the UWI, although the other so called Tertiary Institutions have not produced any change either. UTECH held some promise but instead of continuing to turn out Engineers who could have continued to transform Jamaican Manufacturing it has gone totally UWI on us and is nothing more than Yes Man/Comrade Talk Shop.
