An Issue of Service

My friend went out to dinner with her man. The server filled the glasses with water and took their appetizer orders and the drink orders.

My friend put the glass of water to her lips to take a sip and it was only by then that she saw that there was a big lipstick mark on the opposite end of the rim of the glass.

She called the server over and pointed it out. The server told her that the mark was from my friend's lipstick!

My friend was affronted and said it was not. The server insisted it was. My friend said to hell with it, she wanted to leave, cause if they had dirty glasses on the table, she's now afraid to eat anything there.

They insisted that the bill had to be paid - for drinks and appetizers (which hadn't yet come to the table it was about $30)

What would you have done?

i say walk out without paying. as i've not eaten.
but times have changed.
now restaurants are calling the police and having people charged for walking out on bills. in MD they are calling it theft.

Paid the $30. Ask to speak with owner/manager. Send letter to the editor of local paper, send bad review on local restaurant guide websites, report them to the Health Dept.

Exactly what happened!

They refused. The manager came over and threatened to call the cops. My friend grabbed up the glass and said yes, please call the cops!

The server said my friend was being threatening with the glass. My friend said she grabbed the glass because she didn't want them to hide the evidence.

Of course by now, the whole restaurant is talking and murmuring about it. Some people are looking at their food like they were scared, some were looking at my friend and her man like they were just ghetto.

The manager came back and decided that they would 'meet' my friend and her partner halfway by charging them for only half - $15.

My friend's man wanted to just pay the thing and even had his wallet in hand to do so. By now, my friend, who is nobody's push over, was yelling some breed a Jamaican badwod

The dishwasher and the chef came out to 'assist' I guess ~lol~

My friend told her man he wasn't paying for ish and said they were staying put until the cops got there.

By then, the manager just wanted them gone. She asked for the glass back and told them that they should leave she wasn't going to call the cops.

My friend said she told them she was keeping the glass. The manager said fine, just leave and don't come back.

When my friend got outside, she threw the glass. It smashed against the building. Den dem drive aff...

Now she a tell mi say har man a say a people like she gi black people bad name...

</div></div> imho yes cause a board of health violation does more damage dan broken glass .. I would have kept the glass as evidence and have the health dept do DNA fi see seh it was not u friend lipstick pon de glass

She handled it in poor taste...I would not have paid...if there was opposition I would have insisted that they call the cops...knowing full and well that they would not have mi wuddan jus leff an do as PZ seh

I don't think I would've gone through all that trouble. I advised her to write a review on restaurantica and she could prolly call the local food inspectors to do a surprise stop there... but otherwise...

Now, really. Was all that drama worth $30? She embarrassed her date and wanted to tell him *not* to pay with *his* money? Your friend sounds like she may have some self-control issues and is also controlling, I'm sorry to say.

But why should they have paid just to save face???? I think we tolerate too much shyte just because we're constantly thinking about what people are thinking about us.

I don't care what people think about me. And while I wouldn't have cursed as loudly and as fluently as she did, I can't say that I wouldn't have thrown the glass...

mail the glass to the local food inspectors... not too csi ish but the local food inspector would take action given the effort put into the complaint

there have been couple cases where the restuarant called the cops claiming &quot;theft&quot; cause the people were refusing to pay, last case mi see was one &quot;chain resturant&quot; in florida weh the ooman seh she see hair inna har food

To me, it is not about saving face. If the server told me that from the get go, I would know that this place was not worth my patronage. The manager was also quite out of order ... another clue to me to get out of there with no drama and make sure wider community is aware of my bad experience at this restaurant.

If she'd mailed the glass or even took it in personally to the health department, they wouldn't have ran dna tests on it. They prolly would've checked for food borne diseases or bacteria. They wouldn't check for dna.

Which is why I think she should call and tip them off so that they can do a surprise visit.

The bottom line is, while I think she over reacted to certain aspects, I can't come down that hard on her cause she was in a very negative spotlight - and one that was not of her own making.

The server should've taken the glass instead of accusing my friend. That's the issue of service right there.
