Yes the &quot;mammy&quot; in Gone with the Wind was played by Hattie McDaniel. A little web research on Ms. McDaniel's life would humble the best of many self-righteous black folk who choose to belittle Ms. McDaniel's life. That is a shame.

I remember watching a documentary on Hattie where it was saying for the movie Scarlett (or whateva har name was) kept slapping her in the face for a scene. And they had so many takes and for every take, Hattie would get slapped and slapped and slapped...

Until she couldn't take it anymore and she had to beg them to stop!

The other thing I remember from that doc, is that for the Oscars, her party was given the worst table in the back of the house where they could hardly see the stage (back then, they would seat the oscar contenders and dignitaries etc at tables). Her table was stuck in a corner near the swinging doors that the wait staff used, so every time someone went through, the doors would swing and bang the chairs and the table. I can only imagined what they got served...
