People can bun fiyah on her all they want and she may have a vulgar mouth at times (I agree), but she's doing damn well for herself (a big achievement) and is to be admired for that...judge not...

People will always have selective recollection, or will take things out of context. Hattie was successful during the Great Depression - when, as a group, black people in America fared the worst.

I do not love her in GWTW. Matter of fact, I do not love the movie, precisely because of the portrayal of her and blacks in the flick. But she needed to work and when it comes down to it, she did what she had to do.

blu and others like him, can rake her over the coals from the comfort of their homes while reaping the benefits of the opportunities that she paved the way for them to enjoy.

It's easy and it's cowardly.

I do not like some of the choices she made but I will not disparage her, or remember her only for those choices. She was much more than 'mammy'. The abuse that she overcame, the fights that she won, her struggle to define herself when a white world wanted to box her in, those are the things that she should be remembered for.

I agree. I dont put Hattie and Monique in the same category at all.

And my disdain for Monique started long before she won the Oscar or chatted about her open marriage...again.....She said the same thing 2 or 3 yrs ago in an Essence issue that featured her on the cover.

the powers that be have a way to convey the image they want of certain ones thru the mass media...
same thing happened with hip-hop & dancehall...
we are so happy to get recognition that we care not how that recognition is achieved...
"best actress" is subjective...
what is not subjective is that the majority of black oscar winners seem to have been for certain types of movies, while another kind of movie is totally ignored by the academy...
the corporate hidden hands know what they are doing...

i would like to see hollywood do a movie about the tulsa, oklahoma ethnic cleansing incident...known as "black wall street"....
an incredibly successful african-american economic powerhouse city in the 1920's bombed by the european-american terrorists and destroyed by vicious white mobs angry at this type of black affluence in their midst...
there were many black film companies (though suppressed) making quality films, so seeing hattie winning the first oscar for a black woman-- in a slave role in the "great american film"-- as the epitome of the acting world is misleading...
it falls into the hands of the ones who desire the people to only define themselves thru the "dominant/majority" population--i.e. european-americans (whites)...
