Yea, being a mother is the hardest job in the world, but never are you justified in being physically abusive to your child....

but if you grew up like that, very difficult to get over that hurdle and do different....(you either repeat the sh*t, or learn the lesson and refrain from that and appreciate what you have learnt, just my 2 cents...).

Thank god I have never even smacked my child, actually think it is even illegal here, seen as abuse....(and right they are!). </div></div>Well I got physical discipline, and so did mine and I GUESS we are ok, have to take a vote.

No, Marilyn, I don't think that is true at all. Abuse is abuse. The teenage girl in Memphis was fortunate that she had a sympathetic ear - police, social services, whatever - to report the abuse. Unfortunately for many Jamaican children who are brutalized by their parents, this is not the case.

Running your own home is Jamaica simply means that as a parent, pickney nah tek step wid yuh but that should not translate into 'Jamaican mother style beat down' which, sorry to say, I found offensive.

Because they showed mug shots I thought they had her, but seems that was from a previous arrest.

When I originally posted the thread it was from just the little blurb they give you in commercial air time to get you to watch the news. I didn't have all the details about the mother's past and the nature of how far the beating went etc.

I know there is a many a person on here who can testify to the famous discipline dispensed in Jamaica that we now term &quot;child abuse&quot;. I can attest that in Black America, the most famous and common form was beating with extentsion cords, throwig skillets, or the iron.

These things now we consider no no's. So the title of the post and the thread were ill conceived, and for that I apologize.

I see nothing wrong with the title as I witness Jamaican mothers being heavy-handed with their kids on the street, in the stores, at the airports, in church and even at the school gates on a regular basis.

Not to mention that the more colorful the weave, the tighter the leggings and the more visible the piercings are, is the bigger the threat to the child, from what I have observed.

It is what it is!
