Almost all of us as Jamaicans heard this growing up and many of us felt it too. It is also a common perception, as Marilyn stated, that black Americans are heavy-handed with their children.

Black slaves in the Americas and Caribbean were beaten and dealt heavy handed so they can bend to the rules of their masters.
