there are no doubt <span style="font-style: italic">some</span> women who are that - but you clearly are not smart enough to make a distincction between those kinds of people, vs. an upstanding Black woman of intelligence and good character who has a perfect right and freedom to make her own choice to be with whomever she chooses.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Oprah lied about poverty, sex abuse, tell-all book claims</span>

Oprah Winfrey embellished her poor upbringing and made up stories about sexual abuse to boost her ratings, her relatives say in Kitty Kelley’s new biography.

Although Winfrey claims she never had any new dresses or dolls, and had to adopt two cockroaches as pets growing up in rural Mississippi, her cousin contends she was actually relatively “spoiled” as a little girl.

“Where Oprah got that nonsense about growing up in filth and roaches I have no idea,” Katherine Carr Esters said. “I’ve confronted her and asked, ‘why do you tell such lies?’ Oprah told me ‘that’s what people want to hear. The truth is boring.’”

In “Oprah,” which goes on sale tomorrow, Kelley also describes how rumors once swirled at ABC about a relationship between Winfrey and Diane Sawyer.

Employees there described “giggly late-night phone calls,” and a series of lavish gifts from Winfrey, including gigantic sprays of orchids and a one-carat diamond toe ring.

Despite such rumors, Kelley concludes that Winfrey is “asexual.”

However, she quotes sources describing how in 1989 Winfrey paid an ex-boyfriend $50,000 to keep quiet about her gay brother and “some lesbian affairs.”

As for her relationship with longtime partner Stedman Graham, according to the book the two do not share a bedroom.

Perhaps the biggest secret of the book is left a secret. Oprah still does not know the true identity of her father. Esters told Kelley who he is, on the condition she not publish the information until Winfrey’s mother comes clean to her daughter.

Vernon Winfrey, the man who raised Oprah, is also frustrated with the way she has played fast and loose with the truth.

“She may be admired by the world, but I know the truth,” he says. “So does god and so does Oprah. Two of us remain ashamed.“

Vernon reserves his harshest words for Winfrey’s best friend, Gayle King, who put the kibosh on a biography he was working on.

Calling her a “dirt hog“ and a “street heifer,“ he blames King for a rift in their relationship.

“She’s become too close to that woman Gayle,“ he says.

You've watched her talk show every day for almost 24 years, you have a lifetime subscription to O, you're a charter member of her book club, and you've TiVo'd every teary made-for-TV movie she's put her name above the title of.

But until you've gotten a load of the dirt Kitty Kelley dug up for her new, highly unauthorized biography, you don't know Oprah Winfrey. Here are the CliffsNotes (or should that be Tesh Notes?):

• She hooked up with John Tesh. Yeah, that John Tesh. Before there was Stedman Graham (whom a source in the book calls &quot;boring as hell&quot, there was Teshy. Back in the mid-'70s, prior to his entrée into New Age born-again synth-playing, he was a news anchor at Nashville's WTVF-TV, when a then-20-year-old Winfrey was hired on staff. According to Kelley's book, the unlikely duo struck up a relationship and eventually moved in together, until the &quot;social pressures&quot; of being an interracial couple got to Tesh. As the story goes: &quot;He said one night he looked down and saw his white body next to her black body and couldn't take it anymore. He walked out in the middle of the night…He told me he later felt very guilty about it.&quot; And we thought being dumped via Post-It was bad. For his part, Tesh hasn't commented on the coward's run, but confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that the duo &quot;dated for a short time...We remain friends to this day.&quot;

• She rules by fear. Not intentionally, mind you. But while appearing on the Today show (the only one that'll have her, apparently) this morning, Kelley said that the book inadvertently turned her into the Kathy Griffin of the publishing world. Among those who've allegedly blacklisted Kelley: Barbara Walters, Larry King, Rachael Ray, Charlie Rose and David Letterman. (We're assuming the big O herself goes without saying.) &quot;You're very brave,&quot; she told Matt Lauer. Don't forget glib!

• The book isn't going to do anything to stop those gay rumors. &quot;I know people are expecting me to 'out' her,&quot; Kelley told USA Today. &quot;But I think she's just asexual. She's poured all of her energies into her career. And if she is, she is never ever, ever going to come out. So relax, people.&quot; Of course, that didn't stop her from liberally quoting Rosie O'Donnell on the Howard Stern Show last year musing that Oprah and BFF Gayle King are &quot;the emotional equivalent of a gay couple,&quot; or author Erica Jong's remark that she &quot;would not be surprised if Oprah is gay.&quot;

• She has a secret birth father. Kelley has described Winfrey's life as being &quot;choked with secrets,&quot; the biggest one of which is her not knowing who her birth father is. Kelley spent three days in Mississippi with Winfrey's aunt, Katharine Esters, who told Kelley the identity of Winfrey's real father but swore the author to secrecy. Kelley did not divulge the information in the book, because she said Winfrey's mother has yet to share that information with her famous daughter. (Of course, as Esters is still holding a grudge against Winfrey for failing to promote her own memoir and harbors long-held &quot;disagreements over the family's history,&quot; she may not be the most unbiased source out there.)

• Oprah might want to have her lawyers take another look at those confidentiality agreements. Kelley interviewed roughly 850 sources for the book, most of whom are &quot;present or former employees,&quot; whom Kelley said had to remain anonymous &quot;because they signed binding confidentiality agreements.&quot; Well, clearly not that binding. She also managed to score an interview with Oprah's father, Vernon Winfrey, who let rip the following sound bite-ready quotes: &quot;I need her show like a hog needs a holiday.&quot; And! &quot;She may be admired by the world, but I know the truth. So does God and so does Oprah. Two of us remain ashamed.&quot; With fathers like that, who needs alleged birth parents?

I am asking because this is common knowledge...Oprah first appeared in talk show to compete with Phil Donahue...they were running neck and neck until Oprah revealed that she was an incest victim and spoke of the child.

She began by debunking some of the mystique of Jackie Onassis and the sexual peccadilloes of JFK, went on to tear a strip through the reputations of Frank Sinatra, Nancy Reagan and George Bush, and earned along the way the distinction of being the world's best known poison pen biographer. But with the publication of Kitty Kelley's latest book, critics are asking whether she has finally met her match.

Photograph: Gino Domenico/Associated Press The subject of Kelley's latest output of investigation-cum-gossip-cum-rumour is Oprah Winfrey, and advance peeks at the book, Oprah: A Biography, ahead of its publication tomorrow by Crown, a division of Random House, suggests that for once the giant killer may have been outsmarted. As The New Yorker's reviewer, Lauren Collins, puts it, the famously secretive Winfrey has proved to have such tight control over the people close to her that &quot;Kelley's pen is not dripping poison so much as slightly curdled milk&quot;.

Janet Maslin of the New York Times concurs that though the book &quot;aims for the jugular, it doesn't draw blood&quot;.

The most juicy piece of new information contained in the 524 pages turns out to be less than complete. Kelley claims to have uncovered one of the great remaining secrets about the billionaire TV celebrity, a fact so deeply buried that even Winfrey herself has yet to learn it.

The biographer claims in the book that Vernon Winfrey, the man who brought the teenaged Oprah up as his daughter in Nashville, Tennessee, was not her real father. The writer says in the course of three days of interviews with Winfrey's cousin, 81-year-old Katharine Esters, in Kosciusko, the small Mississippi town where Winfrey was born to unmarried parents in 1954, she was told the identity of Winfrey's biological father.

The revelation, as the New York Times notes, is the &quot;only real 'Gotcha!'&quot; moment in the book. But even then it dissolves in the hand. Kelley says that she has decided not to share this nugget with her readers in order to give Winfrey the chance to discover her true father's name from her mother, Vernita Lee.

It is a tease that, judging from early reviews of the book, sums up its mishmash of old Oprah quotes dredged up from newspaper and magazine interviews and fresh quotes from individuals who are too distant to the TV celebrity to be able to offer genuine credibility.

Kelley says she carried out 850 interviews over four years in her research for the book. But Gayle King, Winfrey's close friend, told ABC News on Monday: &quot;When I heard she interviewed 850 people, I'm thinking Oprah doesn't even know 850 people.&quot;

The problem appears to have been that, through a combination of legal and personal leverage, Winfrey successfully shut down access to her immediate coterie. It is well known that anyone who works for the doyenne, in whatever capacity, has to sign a confidentiality agreement; Kelley has said that about a third of the people she approached for interview turned her down.

Kelley has also complained that Winfrey's grip over the TV networks is so strong, and her friendships with top TV personalities so wide, that several important potential showcases for the new book — including Barbara Walters's The View on ABC, Larry King Live on CNN, Charlie Rose on public television and David Letterman of CBS — have shunned her, for fear of alienating Winfrey.

Whatever the reason, Kelley's book appears to be less revelatory than her previous biographies, and will probably have little impact on Winfrey as she begins the next chapter of her astonishing career. On 9 September Winfrey will broadcast her last daytime talk show on network TV. She will thereafter dedicate herself to the development of her own cable network, OWN, and a new series called Oprah's Next Chapter that will be put out through it late next year.

Kelley broke into the biography market in 1978 with Jackie Oh! It gives an iconoclastic take on JFK's widow, whom she describes as ruthless and bullying.

Frank Sinatra

Her portrayal of Ol' Blue Eyes as a misogynist friend to the Mob was so incendiary he issued a $2m lawsuit attempting to block the book on the grounds that His Way was unfair and unflattering. Big mistake. Sinatra eventually dropped the action, and the biography flew off the bookshelves.

Nancy Reagan

Sinatra made another prominent appearance in Kelley's book on the first lady. She alleged that the two had had a steamy affair that may have even carried on during Reagan's years in the White House.

The royal family

The Royals was published in 1997, but only in the US as it was deemed too hot to handle in the UK with its much tougher libel laws. A huge kerfuffle ensued, but the Guardian's reviewer, Ben Pimlott, concluded it was all a storm in a teacup. Anybody looking in it for new information about the house of Windsor &quot;should cancel their ticket to the US to purchase a copy&quot;, he wrote. &quot;So far from being hot, Kelley's news is as cold as a dead grouse.&quot;</span>

Tesh acknowledged Monday that he and Oprah Winfrey were once an item - one of the juicy tidbits in a new tell-all biography abut the talk show queen.

&quot;Oprah and I were cub reporters in Nashville nearly 40 years ago and we dated for a short time,&quot; Tesh told the News, which first reported the story on Sunday.

The odd pairing is revealed in Kitty Kelley's &quot;Oprah,&quot; which hits bookshelves Tuesday.

Exclusive excerpts obtained by the News said Winfrey and the New Age musician were live-in-lovers during the 1970s when they both lived in Nashville.

The book claims Tesh bolted in the middle of the night because of the &quot;social pressure&quot; of being half of an interracial couple.

Neither Tesh, 57, nor Winfrey, 56, would comment on Kelley's claim.

The much-anticipated book says that Winfrey mentioned Tesh during a 1996 taping of her show - but copped only to a platonic dinner date.

&quot;We remain friends to this day,&quot; Tesh told the News.
