That's the only way to describe the situation in northern Europe right now.
And that's all thanks to a volcano in Iceland.
About 4000 flights within Europe were cancelled today and that could rise to 6000 on Friday. Even Canadians planning to travel to many European destinations are out of luck. Air Canada and Air Transat were forced to cancel at least 30 flights because of the ash plume. Airlines are warning travellers to check their websites for any flight status updates.
At least two dozen airports were shut down this morning. Europe's busiest airport, Heathrow in London, suspended all incoming and outgoing flights, affecting about 180,000 people. Airports in France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Germany have also been affected. A spokeswoman for air traffic service Eurocontrol, says half of all trans-Atlantic flights will be cancelled Friday. from here

How much money they losing depends on if they were making or losing money from before. But each cancellation costs hundreds of thousands of dollars due to lost revenue, and putting up passengers in the hotels, paying the crew, and paying leases on the aircraft that are sitting idle.
