April 26, 2010

Hundreds of people gathered outside Arizona’s Capitol building on Sunday in a largely peaceful protest against the state’s tough new immigration law.

Chanting “Yes we can,” waving American flags and holding signs reading “We have rights” and “We are human,” demonstrators kept up a festive spirit as they denounced the bill signed Friday by Gov. Jan Brewer.

The new law requires police to determine whether a person is in the United States legally. It also requires immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times and requires police to question people if there is reason to suspect they’re in the United States illegally.

Protesters worry that the law will foster racial profiling.

“What is ‘reasonable suspicion?’ ” protester Jose Acosta asked Sunday. “Are we going to get pulled over just because of a broken taillight or because of the color of our skin? … If so, is everybody going to be pulled over?”

The Rev. Al Sharpton, along with leaders from the National Action Network and the Hispanic Federation, announced Sunday that he will legally challenge the law.

The law “is an affront to the civil rights of all Americans and an attempt to legalize racial profiling,” Sharpton said in a statement after the bill’s signing Friday. “As one who helped to make racial profiling a national issue and who has in the last year visited Arizona several times to rally against these draconian immigration policies, I am calling for a coalition of civil rights organizations to work with those in Arizona to resist and overturn this state law.”

“We will go to Arizona when this bill goes into effect and walk the streets with people who refuse to give identification and force arrest,” Sharpton said.

President Barack Obama has called the new law “misguided” and has instructed the Justice Department to examine it to see if it’s legal. Civil rights advocates have vowed to challenge the law in court, saying it would lead to racial profiling.

Supporters of the law say Arizona’s example will force the federal government to take steps to seal the border.

The activists who joined Sharpton at a Manhattan news conference said they are prepared to commit civil disobedience if those efforts fail.</span>

This doesn't look good and only from the standpoint that Al Sharpton may be walking into a trap that only the Tea Baggers and Repugnats will benefit from... For sure, the law does affect the many whose civil rights will be violated, but the blacks should be careful not to be the sole leaders or to be out front on this struggle&quot; that could have broad sweeping consequencies across the nation and for it's President... This &quot;civil rights struggle&quot; is primarily a Latino/Mexican American one that should be spearheaded by them and supported by whites blacks and what have you, to stop this injustice... IMO. There should not be the kind of MLK style &quot;civil disobedience&quot; by Sharpton leading the pack, but fight they must...

What about the rights of the Americans that are citizens of Arizona that want this? 70% of the people of Arizona support this law.

Brian Ross and ABC News report what officials caution is now a dangerous and even deadly crime wave. <span style="font-weight: bold">Phoenix, Arizona has become the kidnapping capital of America, with more incidents than any other city in the world outside of Mexico City and over 370 cases last year alone.</span> But local authorities say Washington, DC is too obsessed with al Qaeda terrorists to care about what is happening in their own backyard right now.

“We’re in the eye of the storm,” Phoenix Police Chief Andy Anderson told ABC News of the violent crimes and ruthless tactics spurred by Mexico’s drug cartels that have expanded business across the border. “If it doesn’t stop here, if we’re not able to fix it here and get it turned around, it will go across the nation,” he said.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown warned that as the U.S. government focuses so intently on Islamic extremist groups, other types of terrorists – those involved with the same kidnappings, extortion and drug cartels that are sweeping Phoenix – are overlooked

in order to enforce such a law they would most likely have to single out persons based on race....mexican americans either born in the US or naturalized will get caught up in the net of racial profiling and if perchance they have no proof that they are indeed citizens then they will have be in police custody until they can provide such evidence....in essence their liberty will be deprived which is a violation of the fourteenth amendment.

Republican Sen. John McCain's daughter Meghan is speaking out against Arizona's new immigration law, taking a different stance than her father.

In a column published at The Daily Beast, Meghan McCain, who often tries to position herself a spokesperson of sorts for young Republicans, called the new law &quot;seriously flawed&quot; and &quot;essentially a license to pull someone over for being Hispanic.&quot;

The new law compels police officers to question a person about his or her immigration status if there is &quot;reasonable suspicion&quot; that person may be in the country illegally. It would also make it a crime under state law to be there illegally. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed it into law on Friday, but some Arizona lawmakers are vowing to fight the measure.

Why is it that when I cross back over the border into my OWN COUNTRY I have to show PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP?....but in a border state that is the known #1 spot for illegal entry into the US the Feds won't enforce illegal entry.
