Prime Minister Bruce Golding. (Gleaner Company photo)The country is abuzz with debate about the future of the current Jamaica Labour Party Administration.

Senior leaders of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) were sequestered at Vale Royal in St. Andrew on Friday afternoon, in a crucial meeting with Prime Minister Bruce Golding, convened to consider his future as Prime Minister.

Information Minister Daryl Vaz confirmed that the party hierarchy was meeting with various groups to chart the way forward for the government in the face of mounting calls for his resignation.

The clamour for Prime Minister Golding to step aside has risen to a cacophony since his statement to parliament on Tuesday in which he confessed to sanctioning the engagement of US law firm, Manatt, Phelps and Phillips to lobby the Obama administration over the extradition request for Christopher &quot;Dudus&quot; Coke.

No crisis

Meanwhile, Mr. Vaz is trying to assure the nation that there is no crisis of governance.

Mr. Vaz who was speaking to journalists gathered at Vale Royal Friday, insisted that reports that the Prime Minister had resigned were false.

An obviously agitated Daryl Vaz rushed out of the high level Vale Royal talks to pour cold water on media reports that the Prime Minister had stepped down.

According to Mr. Vaz, several meetings are being held and the country will be updated on the way forward as soon as those discussions come to an end.

&quot;The government is functioning. The Prime Minister has taken seriously the calls and the statements that have been issued, therefore the Prime Minister as a responsible person would then have to make sure and do the necessary consultations which began this morning with an officer meeting,&quot;

&quot;He goes into a meeting this afternoon with Members of Parliament and Senators followed with other meetings with his constituency and other party groups ending with a meeting on Sunday with the Central Executive. After that the Prime Minister and the government will issue and communicate to the country the results of these consultations,&quot; Mr. Vaz said.

And Mr. Vaz urged the media to act with restraint.

&quot;In a situation like this everything has to be aired. If you know the Prime Minister as well as I do you would know that the thing first and foremost of concern to the Prime Minister would be his party,&quot;

&quot;He has so far gotten the full backing as you would expect of his Cabinet colleagues and the officer corps but that is only one function of the party. Obviously based on the calls that are being made for his resignation that is going to be a topic of discussion and nobody is going to hide from that but please don't pre-judge that and create chaos and confusion. Obviously you would expect Vale Royal to be popping with activity because of what has transpired,&quot; he said.

The insecurity business pays a lot. Good thing they can go to court or they might settle it in the streets.

Bruce shouldn't call an election; he should resign. The party should choose a new leader to be appointed by the GG. The new PM should call elections within 12-18 months, therein giving him/her enough time to make changes to the cabinet, embark on bold initiatives, build some confidence and seek his/her own mandate.

this is the thing that gets me about jcan politics. that the consideration is not the country and government, but the party. if the prime minister is considering his future, it should be in the context of whether he has the confidence of the electorate. it's not a matter of whether it's good for the party, but for the counry, if he weere to stay or go.

We all know that all politicians have their loyalties to their party.
This is moreso true in JA where parties are bigger than life.

But it's one thing to think it, and another thing to say it.
The electorate knows the PM's layalties and priorities but
expects to hear that the PM will do what's good for the country
even if it's not true.

Come on Bruce, you should know how to play the game by now.
