When parliament meets it will not be to tackle the issues that really need addressing, it will be now bogged down with this scandal.

Bruce's wife seh dem family life is strained





As the Manatt, Phelps &amp; Phillips plot thickens, Lorna Golding, the wife of the prime minister, sought refuge at her regular place of worship, the Andrews Memorial Church yesterday.

However, her husband, under pressure and consulting on his next move, was not present.

During service, Mrs Golding was called up and prayer was offered for the Golding family.

Mrs Golding told the con-gregation that the family was hurting in the face of the deafening calls nation-wide for the prime minister's resignation.

Though the church leaders prayed for the Golding family, Pastor Lorenzo King slammed the Government for its handling of the Manatt, Phelps &amp; Phillips fiasco, demanding that the prime minister be absolutely truthful.

King, known for frank and scathing sermons, also called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission - akin to the one set up in post-apartheid South Africa.

In uncharacteristic involvement during his sermon, the choir was instructed to raise placards of protest demanding transparency and justice.

After the service, King told The Sunday Gleaner that the prayer was offered during this time of &quot;special need&quot; for the Golding family.

However, he was quick to point out that it was nothing outside of the ordinary, as Mrs Golding usually attended service on the Sabbath.

&quot;She came to worship and we prayed for her as a member of our church. We surrounded her and prayed,&quot; said King.

He declined to comment on whether Prime Minister Golding should resign.

The problem is that unlike Britain, Canada and the USA we allow our party politicians to keep running for office election after election.
Portia Simpson-Miller remains as the leader of a possible alternate Govt. Her shadow ministers were once members of the cabinet tht were voted out by the electorate. Not one has backed away, except for KD Knight and Paul Robertson.
No new faces with new ideas are encouraged to step up. It`s the same old same old, private party running for public office.

The Central Executive of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Sunday afternoon said the embattled Party Leader and Prime Minister Bruce Golding would be staying put.

The Central Executive is still locked in talks about issues evolving from the Mannatt, Phelps, Phillips affair at the Sandals Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.

<span style="font-weight: bold">However, in a press conference which ended over an hour ago, Karl Samuda, General Secretary of the JLP, told journalists that Mr. Golding had the full backing of the party which had voted unanimously that the Prime Minister was fit to continue his dual roles as Party Leader and Prime Minister.</span>

In making this statement, the General Secretary insisted that Mr. Golding had done nothing wrong.

&quot;We in the party are satisfied that the allegations against him do not rise nearly to the level that would necessitate him resigning as leader of the party or as Prime Minister of the country. We feel very strongly that, and having reviewed al the details and the statements made, and the facts available to us, that the Prime Minister did not lie to the people of Jamaica,&quot; said Mr. Samuda.

There have been a flurry of demands from civic, business and religious groups for the Prime Minister to resign following his disclosure on Tuesday that he sanctioned the engagement of US Law Firm Manatt Phelps and Phillips in his role as Leader of the JLP.

If he decides not to resign backed by his cabinet to tough it out, who knows what effect will this have on Dudus? One way or the other, I think a price will be exacted, we just dont know how much and by whom. OTH, it could be a &quot;multiple price&quot; situation... We really are living in interesting times...

JLP rejects Golding's offer to resign

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) hierarchy has revealed that the Prime Minister Bruce Golding has offered to resign over the controversial Manatt, Phelps and Phillips issue.

But the JLP chairman Dr Ken Baugh says the party is not accepting Mr Golding’s offer to resign.

Dr Baugh made the revelation at a press conference in Ocho Rios, St Ann, this afternoon during a break from a JLP Central Executive meeting.

Since Friday, the Prime Minister has been engaged in a series of talks with various JLP groups as calls mount for his resignation.

At the press conference this afternoon the Dr Baugh revealed that throughout the consultations, the Prime Minister has maintained that he would step down.

According to Dr Baugh, although the Prime Minister does not want to resign, Mr Golding believes it is the appropriate thing to do.

But Dr Baugh says the JLP will not accept Golding’s offer to resign because it does not believe the Prime Minister has done anything wrong in the Manatt matter.

There has been increasing pressure for the Prime Minister to step aside since he told Parliament on Tuesday that he had sanctioned the initiative for persons within his party to lobby the United States against the extradition request for Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.

Mr Coke is wanted on gun and drug charges.

The Prime Minister’s admission came less than a month after he told the Parliament that the Government had not engaged any firm in the Dudus extradition matter.

Since making the admission last week, Mr Golding has been insisting that the engagement of Manatt was a party initiative and not a Government idea.

He has also said the more than US$49,000 paid to Manatt was provided by contributors of the JLP and not Mr Coke.

So the narrative will be that Bruce offered to resign and his party rejected his resignation. Noice.

It may resonate for a little while but if the Dudus extradition issue remains unresolved it is going to get stale really fast.

If he manages to survive this, which is still doubtful, it is safe to say he would be unelectable in 2012 and would have to hand the leader and PM post off to someone else before a general election...and that would be a plus.

You are wondering why Dudus in not on flight out to the USA yet? It is all rooted in our tribal politics.
Dudus is merely a pawn in dirty game and both the PNP and the JLP knows that removing to satisfy any side potentially very dangerous.

smaddy enlighten me on the constitutionality of this, pls. if he is prime minister, would he not discuss his resignation with the head of state (Queen or GG)? how is it that it is the party that decides whether he is prime minister or not?
