Ok - I don't read Essence on the regular at all but occasionally, I'll give it a whirl.

I just find this move wrong.

I mean, is there NO woman of color in NY, in the nation, that was able or qualified to fill that position? You're kidding me ...

About 10 years ago (this was before it was taken over by Time Inc) I was offered and almost took a job at Essence Magazine. After spending about 3 days there, making the rounds, consulting on a project, bearing witness to several very telling situations, I declined. I'm so glad I did.

Of all "mainstream" fashion magazines I know of, there's only 1 prominent fashion editor I'm aware of - and he's at large, not permanent.

I am agreeing with the question posed by Sue Yuri

Ellianna Placas is no stranger to fashion. She was once a Fashion and home director for Life & Style Weekly, House Beautiful, O Magazine and various other publications. I think she may have gotten the job based on her experience? Maybe??

Why Yuri – Who says the position was a “black person” position. I am a subscriber to Essence and right there in fine print is a statement of them being an <span style="font-style: italic">Equal opportunity Employer</span>. Never saw any claims that they only hire black people ( That is against the law BTW). Is it the color of her skin period or the position she got that is bothering you?

The position.

The (supposed) institution that Essence is, supposed to be.

The mission and purpose that Essence wanted to stand on – what it represents. I'm sure you're familiar with it's founder and history.

I’m sure they could’ve found a woman of color to hold that job.

(bear with me – no, I’m not equating the two, but let me ask you) Would you have any problem with Bill Clinton running the NAACP? Out of curiosity did it bother you that Harry Dedyo was the CFO of Essence for donkey years but not black, yet many capable black financial people were available (eg Ray Gerald)

No and No .. Just as I never had a problem with Freeman A. Hrabowski being the President of a University of MD - a school who's founders were white. What is the point?

The history (not to mention the present) of blacks in America, is historically &amp; vastly different than that of whites and so the implications are different. At least for me they are. WE own so precious little here where business is concerned.
