it pains me to watch the news....the top level mgmt are saying that they have received no formal complaint of racism and continue to highlight the fact that dude was stealing beer and selling it to third parties....

There is a very bug difference between s complaint and a <span style="font-weight: bold"> formal</span> complaint.

He seem to have complained but Did not know of the requirements for formal complain.

Neither was he advised.Since the organization was not intrested in addressing it.

Well, at least we can't say that those who lived thru it no realize just how harmful, now though.

Unless, of course they don't believe that only a <span style="font-weight: bold">fool</span> learn from dem owna mistake. The excuses, explanations and denials naah bring dem love ones back and unfortunately some a dem might not have harrassed the man outright, but only giggled wen di racists dem make dem jokes. Well di good suffer with di bad, when dem turn a blind eye everytime.

Me no see the need for the high level analysis. Some people just get sick and tired of being sick and tired of the racism. Why can't they learn? How long it take for dem to realize say is not a laughing matta?

I guess some people can only learn the hard way.

As long as the authorities continue to promote TOLLERANCE instead of equality.

As long as They continue to suppress the historical achievement of minorities in the nation building process.

As long as the media heads continue to headline only the negatives about minorities the attitude against minorities will be one of subhuman treatment.

How can you blame the people who are as brain washed blacks and white equally.

Yes black's are socialized to distrust fellow blacks of the male gender, as are whites socialized to display the same attitude towards black male.

Don't tell me That you have not observed any differences between you general reaction to strange black men Now and before You migrated to this country.

It is a part of the brain washing process in our socialization as a resident of the country.

maybe he didnt know himself, but u really think that a man is lost simply because he has a relationship with someone with a different skin shade .. or race for that matter.

Dont get me wrong, I have my original yardie right here, and if we should split, mi tell har mi headed back a yard fi another.
But it really has more to do with the fact that I dont think I would want to deal with the psychotics of the north american/ized (white) woman.
(I think after a few decades, I may just have an handle on the psychotics of the Jamaican woman .. plus I'm baised that way )
Further, we simply have more in common.. I dont have to explain to her who is ..say Toots Hibbert or Eric Donaldson, or say Ms Lou.. She knows what me talking bout when we reffer to "Where Its At" or "Skateland" or "Hot Tracks" .. or even 'Ring Ding". We can hold a convosation bout imf, independence, manley, pj, eddie, claude massop, jim brown, shandokan, or even early b.
Chat bout helshire and gun boat beach.. dem kinda simple ting deh..
I dont know how some man do it, but if the woman beside me cant relate, dat would drive mi crazy(ier).

Truth be told, I use to (and sometime still) wonder sometime about the mentality of a "brother" when I see them in the malls with the white partner.. BUT the longer I am in Canada, the more I realize that its sometimes simply a matter of your surroundings. Where I am, I see a new black woman possibly once a couple months.. and I really dont know if they Jamaican..

In short, i wous propse that its short sighted to say he lost himself simply because of the race of his mate. If anything, it seems that he gave into his weakness and stupidity to react the way he did to the racism he faced.
Its a bit hypocritic for me to judge, cause when I first moved to Canada, my first "racist" , manager came this close to me making a phone call and having him making the news as the victim of a frikin drive-by. As I type this, I am serious as a judge, MANY times I considered making a phone call and meck someone 'fix him business".. I even contemplated it myself.. but I thought of my family and just grin and beared it.
In the end the works of the Almighty prevailed and mi see where as them sey "patient man ride Donkey.."

I did quit that job because of him, but only to move onto bigger things. (He's since been fired from that company TWICE.... .. its a whole nenda story how he got fired TWICE)
Still face the exclusionism and bigtroy, but because of that experience, I have a better handle on this one.

Ironicly, thru this bredren's failings, the plight of black people in the workplace may come to lights.. even if just for a while..

Conn. shooter told 911 he 'handled the problem'

HARTFORD, Conn. – A black man who went on a shooting rampage at a beer distributor calmly told a 911 operator that it was "a racist place" and that he "handled the problem" but wished he had shot more people.

Omar Thornton called 911 after shooting 10 co-workers — eight fatally — on Tuesday morning at Hartford Distributors Inc. He introduced himself as "the shooter over in Manchester" and said he was hiding in the building, but he would not say where.

"You probably want to know the reason why I shot this place up," he said, his voice steady. "This place is a racist place. They're treating me bad over here. And treat all other black employees bad over here, too. So I took it to my own hands and handled the problem. I wish I could have got more of the people."

Connecticut State Police released the audio of the four-minute 911 call on Thursday, the day company and union officials rebutted suggestions that the company had ignored Thornton's complaints of racism.

Thornton, 34, went on his rampage moments after he was forced to resign when confronted with video evidence that he had been stealing and reselling beer.

The 911 call confirmed suggestions from his relatives and girlfriend that he believed he was avenging racist treatment in the workplace.

Hartford Distributors president Ross Hollander said there was no record to support claims of "racial insensitivity" made through the company's anti-harassment policy, the union grievance process or state and federal agencies.

"Nonetheless, these ugly allegations have been raised and the company will cooperate with any investigation," Hollander said.

The union said 14 of 69 dock workers, or 20 percent, were racial minorities — four black, nine Hispanic, one Asian.

The idea that Thornton's motive may not have been retaliation for losing his job has not sat well with many of the people who knew the victims and have firsthand knowledge of the environment inside the enormous distribution center in Manchester.

<span style="font-weight: bold">"Everybody just thinks this race card is such a wrong thing," said Michael Cirigliano, whose slain brother, Bryan, was Thornton's union representative at the disciplinary meeting and the president of the local union.</span>

Michael Cirigliano also spent three decades working at the warehouse before he retired two years ago.

<span style="font-weight: bold">"The Hispanics and the blacks were telling me they've never seen anything they're accusing the company of in the bathrooms or anywhere else at HDI," he said. "It's never been separated white, black, Asian. It's never been like that</span>."

He said the company had increased its hiring of minorities in recent years.

<span style="font-weight: bold">"They've been bringing in more and more minority people to fill the positions," Cirigliano said. "You could almost go as far as that's reverse discrimination. They were hiring the groups to balance the workplace, because that's what we are in America, there's a balance."</span>

Anthony Napolitano, the son-in-law of victim Victor James, 60, of Windsor, said James treated everyone equally, regardless of race or religion.

Truck driver David Zylberman, a 34-year employee of the company, said that the racism claims "[censored] me off because they were good people."

<span style="font-weight: bold">Thornton's ex-girlfriend, Jessica Anne Brocuglio, told The Associated Press on Thursday that he had a history of racial problems with co-workers at other jobs and believed he was denied pay raises because of his race.

She said he told her: "I'm sick of having to quit jobs and get another job because they can't accept me</span>."

Thornton's girlfriend of the past eight years, Kristi Hannah, said he showed her cell phone photos of racist graffiti in the bathroom at the beer company and overheard managers using a racial epithet in reference to him. Police said they recovered the phone and forensics experts would examine it.

The union's lawyer, Gregg Adler, said the claims of racial mistreatment can be difficult to disprove, but if they had been raised by any employee the union would have acted immediately.

"There's not even a connection between the violence and the accusations as far as we can tell," Adler said. "The only people who were targeted were the people who happened to be in his meeting. And then he went to the warehouse, he just killed people who happened to be near the door."

The 911 operator attempted to keep Thornton on the phone and to talk him into surrendering. Thornton said he would not give up his location in the building and knew police were looking for him.

"When they find me that's when everything is going to be over," he said, assuring the operator he was not going to kill anyone else.

He then said he saw a SWAT team and hastened to get off the phone.

"Tell my people I love them and I gotta go now," he said.

Police found him dead with a gunshot wound to his head.

All i can say is that people have different mind settings, i can never give up my life bacause of 2 racists who are bothering me especially in this day and age, i would have quit and gone about my business, instead of putting my family through all this. Mind you, i would have probably done the same 300 yrs ago coz i would have nothing to lose but not in this day and age.
i work for a homecare company and my whhite supervisor got fired last month coz of incidences in which a lot of my black co-workers complained about my white supervisor was harassing them unnecessarily and all this in big white cowboy country of calgary, Alberta so..................

East Windsor Police have charged a woman with taking beer allegedly stolen by Omar Thornton.

Christy Quail, 33, of Enfield, was arrested Friday afternoon. She is accused of larceny in connection with the beer taken from Hartford Distributors. It's the beer officials at Hartford Distributors say Thornton was caught on tape stealing from the company.

Managers at Hartford Distributors forced Thornton to resign over the allegations Tuesday morning. Moments after a meeting with those managers, Thornton pulled a gun and killed eight co -workers.

Quail was charged with two counts of larceny and possession of stolen beer from Hartford Distributors. The alleged crime took place in East Windsor, which is why it was East Windsor officers who arrested Quail, police said.

It's funny! but in a strange twist, I'm not sure that Thornton is really a common thief that the company has made him out to be...They may have caught him on tape taking beer allegedly stolen from the company, but it may have been done in defiance to what he perceived to be injustice and bigotry against him within the company, which doesn't make it right.... From what I've read, he didn't drink and there is no evidence he sold it to Christy, the woman arrested and charged with larceny in connection with "his theft"... He could have been acting out a "Robbin Hood" type scenario to someone he thought to be in need.. Are there others? they did not say..

Racism can be passive or overt and whichever way it's applied can be harmful destructive, and self defeating.. Because of it's institutional nature, it has morphed into so many ways of administering it, that at times it becomes invisible to those who are not accutely aware of it or savvy to its effect... Thornton was aware of it, experienced it, took as much as he could take and unfortunately did it "his way"... Blacks complaining about "racism" in the workplace is for "fools" . Studies have shown that most folks who are indeed "racist", do not think of themselves "as such" but when put to the test, the results show otherwise...
