i have to disagree...
in the time of garvey there was hope and purpose...

now there is ruthless self interest and unprecedented hatred...

self-hatred is so rampant that a black male in the average inner-city has a greater chance of being murdered by another black male than anyone else...

all these decades later and only european standards of beauty are still accepted by afrikans in 'society'....

self hatred is so complete that the black man now has whole-heartedly embraced the white-man-created epithet of hatred and intolerance- "ni66er"
to address his own kind...
the psychological takeover garvey warned of is in full swing...

the corporate media has worked hand in hand with governmental disinformation campaigns to tighten the chains around the afrikan mind;

it's no coincidence that the jamaican government won't touch garvey with a ten-foot pole...

why is it that i learned more about garvey in school in america (although the textbooks distorted his message) than i ever did in jamaica where he is a so-called national hero?

I know you do, and I find that with most conscious black people.
Some (not you) even purport that we are worst off than during slavery?????

Why I think there is more purpose and hope now is because we have thousand and thousand of organizations that are NOW in existence whose PURPOSE it is to secure our future HOPES. While during the time of Garvey, there was probably hundreds.

This was more true during the time of Garvey and Malcolm, than it is now.....Malcolm himself was one of those ruthless self interested black youths. The Murder rate is more a reflection of poverty (and overcrowding) than racial insensitivity. The level of consciousness among black gives me much hope, as compared to yesteryear.

Back in Garvey's day a black beauty queen was a rarity....even in Africa.
To most Blacks "n66ir" represents a state or condition of living - language is a living thing and blacks have redefine the offensive word from a permanent state of being to a temporary condition of living. It became synonymous with blacks because blacks were very often shown or seen existing in that state of condition.
The recognintion and acceptance of the state you are in is a step in the direction of escaping it.

Not true with the Manley Government.
Yes that is true, when I was in school I form a delegation and when to the headmaster of my school and requested that Garveys philosophy be taught instead of Shakespeare...It was turned down on the grouds that Shakespeare is about literature and Garveys philosophy is Philosophy which was not a part of the curriculum, and that he was adequately cover in History.
