This carton is funny however I think when Clovis does an issues as a cartoon editorial it is not big. I know there are discussions by the Gov't to re-start their anti-skin-bleaching campaign to bring awareness to the dangers of bleaching. It's been going on for years. I remember when Ambi was the bleaching tool of choose in the 1980's. Do you think it will change?

i think the horse gone thru the gate. bleaching now is seen as just another harmless grooming technique.
kartel's use of bleaching isgetting some attention now i think is because he is the most high-profile person to acknowledge bleaching. however, from the 80s bounty killa sing bout "mi cyaan believe di shotta dem a bleach out dem face" in Cyaan Believe Mi Eye.
bleaching used to be a girl ting, but is not just for girls anymore.

Mi had a very good bredren that grew up a member of my teenage crew.. He was somewhat a "boasy" youth who always loved attention.
Cant forget once he had a bredren built a bike/bicycle for him to look like a Katana bike (using sheet metal around the frame)..
That bicycle was PRETTY but try riding it into the wind.. maaan a soso muscles a pedal to get the cycle to move an inch when we rode towards Bayside..But coming back.. man he would FLY like a kite as the sea breeze coming from Forum beach side would send the sheet metal “Katana” bicycle flying towards Naggoes Head..
Don’t mention the loud rumbling noise the sheet metal caused the cycle to make.. The joke was that you could tell him coming a mile away wid the “rumbling” the Katana bicycle would make.
Anyhow he was a very DARK skinned youth with a telephone cut from the corner of his mouth to his ear (don’t remember which side of his face). He had keloid, so the telephone cut was pronounced and made him look like a real bad bwoy.. truth is, he was really a cool hombre that was more a follower than a leader.. mi was the “general” for our little (girls man) crew (no gangster business) and him the captain..
We use to joke with him saying if he wanted to sneak up on someone in a dark alley, all he had to do is to shut his eyes and dont grin..
Anyhow time pass, and we loose the link as we all graduate high schools and people start migrating..
You would hear stories about him coming into drug money and “running tings” in some states overseas..
Then a rumour was that he was the head of a popular crew that drove only one brand of a brand name car, so the crew took the name of the car.Anyway, new years eve I was walking from New Kinston to somewhere off Arnold Rd (I think). The night before someone had dropped a brick in my windscreen (some corner youths I had a run in with decided to teck out their grief pon mi Skettel). Since mi insurance expired the following day, mi wanted to get this insurance cliam completed on the same day, So mi was running between offices. I had left the car at a Windscreen replacement place and walking along (whey that road name that Gun Court is on? The one that runs up between JDF and St Hugh back gate)
Mi a walk and mi just see a Champange colour Lexus pull up cross the road with someone in the car bawling out mi name..
Now remember mi bredren is a black black hombre with a long T-cut in his face.. Mi look up and saw that the person bawling out mi name was the passenger in the car.
Him was a carbon copy of mi bredren, only he was very light skinned.
Him sounded like mi bredren, and mi could see a fainter telephone cut in his face, but mi was confused because the voice came outta a this light skinned bredren who I didn’t know???
Anyhow as the car did a U turn and pulled up, mi noticed that the they had customized license plates and the plates had his Nickname on it..
Suh me go “blooodkl……………………………. Xxxxxx.. a you dat!!!? Booomb……fia! “
Mi thump off his white hands and him ask mi whey me a duh a walk dem place yah.
Mi explain that mi had just move into a scheme in Spanish town, had to race up some stragglers from a corner by mi house, and as a result they decided to send a message with a big stone thru mi windscreen. Mi explain to him about the urgency to get it sorted out today as mi insurance expired by end of year.
Him signal fi mi jump into the back. Mi could see that the driver was more like a body guard as you can tell the “hungry” man dem .. di likkle shatta dem..
Mi jump in and him ask if mi know a who, cause we could arrange f idem get pickup, carry outta Caymanas and get a “rubbing with some Fish board” (Fish board is the board with nails that vendors use to scale fish).
I had a idea who was at least the ring leader, but was new to the community and preferred to get a better handle first.. plus never telling how far a man might guh..
Him spot mi hesitation and say something to the effect ‘ if u change you mind, call me at this number”.. him hand mi a business card .. the card read “Lexus Beauty Supplies” dwl:
A wanted to pop up..
Anyhow my take is that as long as people are mis-educated (cause my bredren was reasonably educated), the bleaching craze will remain.
Many Jamaicans in living Jamaica (I feel) don’t get the who racial insinuations.. They see it as a fad.. fashion..
The best we can do is teach the ones we can and let be the ones we cant..

the youth who was the ring leader, and I suspected had something to do with the attack on mi car was a orphaned youth living on the verandah of distant relatives..
he lived on the verandah and they fed him like you would your dog.
As I got to know the community and became a active member of the association and block leader, I actually became liike a big brother to this youth. As a leader among the other youths, you could see their attitude change as a result of the respect we showed for each other. So much as a reward for not disrupting the community (we had a problem with the idlers making noise in the community,) I would setup "movie nights" for the youths and take a projector from work and setup in the carpark for the youths to watch a movie i'd bootleged.
It was interesting to see the dynamic change from hate to respect, between us..
before leaving for Canada I remember him lurking by mi house as he had heard that i was migrating.." Mi called him aside one morning as mi rushed out and hiim come with eye water inna him eye a express how him sorry bout the car and how him "bex the man a leave"

That is a micrososm of crime in jamaica.
There are more destitute followers than real gangland criminals.
If the police use more sociology as used by police as standard practice crime will get more reasonable.
U til then they will need to arm each police officer and their relatives to the point where hey start shooting their visitors by accident.

There were so many parts of your story that were way larger than the bleaching issue. I was wondering about how easy it was for Lexus to find the yute and retaliate on your behalf.
You know, life is such that we can't always take things on face value. Smaddy-mash-up-mi-cyar-so-dem-haffi-dead is such...such...such... words fail mi right now ... but something along this lines of "we are way bigger than this" is what mi waan seh.
You taught that yute a valuable lesson. Maybe he passed it on , maybe he didn't, but you certainly showed him that you cared and that as humans we can be bigger than the circumstances in our lives. You did something great, my friend, and you said it right here ... I<span style="font-weight: bold">t was interesting to see the dynamic change from hate to respect, between us</span>.

Who knows,vybz could eventually go all out and end up taking the michael jackson route,pretty soon he could end up turning himself into a white girl,violet kartell sounds nice........I can just picture him singing in a high pitch voice with his cute little nose and a dimple in his chin,,......"gaza mi seh".

even di beauty contests had the various shades of black [so to speak] wid it's own contestants...Miss Ebony, Miss diss and Miss dat, for e.g. and some veryyyyl beauutiful black women's pictures would appear in the Star...nobaddie nevah haffie a run fi look to be what they are not, because each "shade" was represented.
But the crux of the mattah is IMO, ovah di years, to bi paawt of the "in crowd" SOME ppl lost their sense not only of "National pride" but their sense of "personal pride"...suffering from low self-esteem and not being happy with who they are, among other things...I didn't say "what they are.."

Dr Dhiru Tanna, chairman of Blue Power Group limited, soap manufacturer and building retailer, has rubbished claims that the popular 'blue soap' or 'cake soap' made by his company, has any skin lightening effect, or that the controversy surrounding the product has increased sales.
"Blue soap does not bleach. It has no ingredients in it that damages the skin," Tanna said. "If anybody is saying that it will discolour the skin or take off pigmentation that is absolutely not true," he told the Business Observer.
Tanna also denied claims that as a result of the popularity of the song the price of the soap or the sales of his products have increased.
On the other hand, he told the Business Observer that "one of Vybz Kartel's producers called us to use one of the machines we use to make the soap appear in his video."
He said he agreed to the use of the machine but with the caveat that "they must tell people that the blue soap that we make will have no effect on bleaching the skin". Tanna said he was assured that this would be done. Vybz Kartel has since released a follow up song, 'Cake Soap' for which the video was shot, but in neither of the songs has he explicitly claimed that the soap causes bleaching.
Tanna said his product is a laundry detergent and even though there are varieties, which can be used for personal care, none of the soaps that Blue Power produces has the effect of lightening the skin.
"No, our company would not have the technology. We make laundry and bathing soaps. I don't know how to make anything else," Tanna said, explaining that his company is now focused on extending into the bathing soap market, which he "has not even begun to touch".
Kartel has himself expressed the desire to manufacture his own brand of 'cake soaps', but Tanna said Blue Power, which is the largest manufacturer of laundry detergent in Jamaica, was not approached to make it, and that despite Blue Power's expertise in making soaps, it would not be a business line he would consider going into at this point.
He said he was told by Kartel's camp that the proposed soap would be a medicated soap for acne.
Tanna explained that a medicated soap would most likely be made overseas and imported into Jamaica with a higher cost base than currently obtains for the soaps that Blue Power manufactures.
"If he is importing medicated soap then it would be coming from abroad and with the duty structure it would be in a different market from us," Tanna said. "Making soap is quite a complex business, you need an extensive distribution network and a manufacturing establishment."
Kartel ignited a fire storm of controversy, and multiple musical counteractions, when he claimed in an interview that the reason for his noticeably lighter complexion was as a result of the use of 'cake soap' combined with the effect of air conditioning. The use of 'cake soap' to enhance the complexion was initially referenced in his song 'Straight Jeans and Fitted' in which the most popular line was "cool like mi wash mi face wid the cake soap".
Blue Power Group became the first manufacturing company to be listed on the Junior Stock Exchange in April last year. The soap and hardware conglomerate, founded over a decade ago, currently enjoys a 40 per cent market share in the soap manufacturing and distribution business in Jamaica. With the soap manufacturing operations on Victoria Avenue off Windward Road, the hardware operations is located in Papine and books revenue of over $40 million per month. For the second quarter ended October 31, 2010, Blue Power Limited posted a 77.3 per cent increase in net profit resulting in a gain of $3.7 million over the corresponding second quarter of 2009.
