That's an excellent point that many are ignoring. there is more to this story than we know. Such as, who did NAACP support during the election? I guarantee if they supported him in the election that he would have accepted the invite.

If they supported someone else, why should he cater to their wishes?

Jamaican joined LePage household as teen

Devon Raymond Jr. came to live with Gov. Paul LePage's family in August 2002 with nothing but a suitcase, some golfing gear, ill-fitting shoes and a Bible, according to the governor's office.


Raymond, 25, was thrust into the spotlight Friday, when LePage mentioned him while making controversial comments about the NAACP.

&quot;And if they want, they can look at my family picture,&quot; LePage said Friday of the NAACP. &quot;My son happens to be black, so they can do whatever they'd like about it.&quot;

Dan Demeritt, the governor's spokesman, said Saturday that Raymond would not be available for interviews by the press. Raymond attended the inauguration last week with other family members, but lives in Monroe, La., where he attends college.

<span style="font-weight: bold">The LePages met Raymond in Jamaica through his father, who caddied for Paul LePage during an island vacation, according to Demeritt.</span>
<span style="font-style: italic">Raymond is not a U.S. citizen, nor has he yet been formally adopted by the LePages.</span>
Raymond moved to Waterville and graduated in 2003 from Waterville High School, where he played on the school's golf team. He attended Husson University -- LePage's alma mater -- for a year and a half, playing golf and studying sports management.

He then studied at Grambling State University in Alabama, where he graduated with a degree in kinesiology -- the study of human movement -- and a minor in sports management.

After a stint as a golf club pro in North Carolina, Raymond is now enrolled at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, where he is studying for a master's degree in business administration, Demeritt said.

In his biography on the social networking site Twitter, Raymond describes himself as &quot;chasing the dreams of being a PGA pro.&quot;

&quot;My dreams are my motivation,&quot; he wrote. &quot;Love positive people and energy.&quot;

In 2005, he wrote on a Jamaican social networking site that he had moved to the United States to &quot;finish high school and get a college education&quot; and also pursue a golf career.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Raymond is from an area of St. Ann's Parish, Jamaica, called Runaway Bay, on the north side of the island between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.</span>
Gov. LePage and his wife, Ann, have two children: Paul LePage II, 21, who attends college in Florida, and Lauren LePage, 22, the new assistant to LePage's chief of staff, John McGough. She lives in the Blaine House in Augusta.

Gov. LePage has two daughters from a previous marriage, Lindsay and Lisa, who live in Canada.

C'mon Derek, you know there are many shades to racism. Frankly, I think people who pull out the 'my best friend is black' (a la that guy who won the haloween contest for best costume last year) or the 'my pastor is black' - Dog the bounty hunter, or the 'I have a black child' - LePage, are racist.

For a minute there, adopting a black child was the thing to do. I think they were considered the new social accessory. Something to talk about at parties and to pat themselves on the back for.

I'm sorry but your pastor/best friend might be black and you walk away.
You don't have to live under the same roof as your pastor/black friend, feed them and send them off to school.

I feel completely comfortable with lonrwolf's assertion that, regarding the NAACP's invite, there simply wasn't anything in it for the guy.

LePage isn't a star (I'd never heard of him) so why would he be following the Angelina Jolie/Madonna fashion?

And I don't believe everyone who insults a black person or a black institution is racist. If he'd said, 'kiss my white butt,' then...

frankly his reference to the Jamaican guy is akin to 'one of my best fren is black'

an incidentally LePage has now announced dat he willll be meeting with the NAACP...so maybe there is something he has to get out of it...deflecting the conversation re his illmannered statement at least...

I thought this was going to be about him having the schools be open on the holiday to make up for a snow day which is all the rage here in the south for the school systems that will be open tomorrow.

If the man said he was not going during the campaign, then I really don't see what the big surprise is now.

Actually, I'm a little disgusted with the NAACP carrying on like they got to beg somebody to show up or even worse, strong arm somebody into it. If he doesn't want to go, let him stay home. He wouldn't have gotten a second invitation anyway from me anyway.

Gov. Paul LePage said Saturday that he’s willing to meet with the NAACP, one day after his comments toward the group sparked outrage.

“The governor said today <span style="font-weight: bold">he’d be willing to meet with the NAACP to discuss issues regarding all Maine’s people</span>,” said Dan Demeritt, LePage’s spokesman. No specific time for the meeting has been set, he added.

LePage made national headlines Friday when he said the NAACP could “kiss my butt” for questioning his decision to decline its invitations to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day events scheduled for this evening and Monday. <span style="font-style: italic">The governor also called the group a “special interest”</span> and said he wouldn’t be “held hostage” by special interest groups.

Rachel Talbot Ross, state director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and president of the group’s Portland branch, said she hadn’t heard from the governor’s office as of Saturday night but was “very pleased” that LePage had offered to meet.

She said <span style="font-weight: bold">one goal of a meeting would be to “educate the governor about the difference between a special-interest group and the goals and agenda of the NAACP.”</span>
Talbot said she wants to “get beyond this and move toward a more respectful discourse” with LePage. “I do hope that the meeting can take place sooner, rather than later.”

Maine governors historically have attended Dr. Martin Luther King Day Jr. events, alternating between breakfasts in Portland and Bangor. Former Gov. John Baldacci attended the breakfasts for seven of his eight years in office, missing the event only in 2009, when he was attending President Barack Obama’s inauguration.

This year, the Portland NAACP is having a dinner this evening to mark the 30th anniversary of the celebration.

Demeritt declined to specify what personal commitments are keeping the governor from the dinner in Portland. LePage is scheduled to attend the funeral of a retired state trooper in Vassalboro on Monday, according to his office.

On Saturday, the NAACP issued another news release containing further scathing criticisms of the governor and his comments.

“The tone Gov. Paul LePage has set just after ten days in office should be an offense to all Mainers and the office he has been entrusted to lead with civility, honesty, and decorum fitting of our highest elected official,” said Ross, the state NAACP director, in the release.

“The Maine NAACP is very concerned that after several attempts to meet with the governor, over a period of eight months, coupled with a policy decision that will severely impact our immigrant brothers and sisters made on his very first day in office, that a pattern may be being established of failing to reach out and engage the diverse communities of Maine,” she added.

The NAACP and other groups are planning a rally in Portland on Monday against LePage’s recent rescinding of an executive order that prohibited state workers, except for those in law enforcement, from inquiring about a person’s immigration status.

Demeritt said LePage, in being willing to meet with the NAACP, wants to get past the controversy and address issues that are important to all Mainers.

They need a fact check for this article. Grambling is in Louisiana not Alabama. It's not the hugest mistake ever, but it does make me wonder what else is wrong.

The story reminds me of the movie, The Blind Side. A white Tennessee republican family took in a homeless black teen who was an excellent football player. There ended up being a bunch of hoopla when he was recruited to play football all over the country and selected USM (a school traditionally known for having a very, very racist past). Some people thought that the couple only adopted him to help out their alma mater. (Football teams can be a really big deal.)

It's the true story of Michael Oher. At any rate, the parents' hearts were in the right place but yes, they were racist. They had to confront their issues that they did not realize they had until he came into their lives.

So to answer Derek's question, yes a racist would adopt a black child. I'm not suggesting a card carrying member of the KKK would, but some who may think themselves liberal in attitude while not realizing they harbor racist attitudes as well.

Of course. I thought that was a given.

I don't know Maine's governor from Adam's house cat. I'm just saying that a racist would adopt a black child not that he is a racist.
