At the Frayser Middle/High School in Memphis, TN 90 students are either currently pregnant or have had a child this school year. These teen moms account for 11 percent of the school’s female population. Those are shocking numbers, but apparently the teen parent issue stretches beyond the walls of the school.
According to AOL Black Voices–last year, over 2,100 girls between the ages of 10 and 19 gave birth in Shelby County where the school is located. Yeah, you read that right–10 years old. Shelby County is predominately poor and black.
Researchers and community activists have started a new campaign called “No Baby!” that they hope will help curb the skyrocketing teen pregnancy rate. Too little, too late?

a conversation came up recently about abortion in the black community...there is an active campaign against abortion in the black community...mi wonder if dem ppl really a face di reality....suppose abortion was not an option? maybe 11% would be 22% ... or more

You didn't have to go , it was optional. If you chose to go there you got free day care, but you had to bring your child to school, because the daycares were learning labs meant to help make you a better mother (if one just must be one too young). If you were a 5th or 6th grade girl, they promoted you to 7th grade and sent you over there to me, because they didn't want them PG in elementary school with the other little kids. So getting pregnant in elementary school would automatically make you a junior high student.

We serviced 250 max a year, with some being repeaters. As many as we serviced, there were many times that who opted to stay in the regular schools they attended and tough it out.

Where as this Frazier situation is pretty flagrant, it still is not isolated here in Memphis, just a little worse than most. I just think there is so little constructive and fun things for kids in Memphis to do, having kids young is a family tradition, as they are mostly 3rd generation teenage pregnancy in the family, Few of them have ever been outside of Frazier to know that there is a world out there, and most of them are NOT getting pregnant by boys in their age group, mostly older men.

People like Joyce North recognized this time coming almost 20 years ago and tried hard to work on it. Ignorance and poverty, and boredom are a lethal cocktail to overcome....what can I say. It's just like the whole city woke up and looked at Frazier and said whooooooooooo what in the hell happened. These are the forgotten children, in the forgotten zip code, and no one cared. The children of these children will soon be in school frustrating personnel so that someone will rant one day like I did on here one day and my remarks ended up back and my job,.. I felt safe to come here to air my thoughts, but I should have known better. Now a whole city is feeling like I felt on that day wondering what in the hell happened to these kids.....
