Israel serves as a land based aircraft carrier for the United States. It serves the purpose of a stable base for U.S control of the oil in the region.
How much oil does the Vatican have?

RichD,
Israel is a base FOR the United States interests in the region. We bribe the Israelis with more money than we give the Egyptians or any other country on the planet and we support their criminal conduct vis a vis the Palestineans and their other neighbors without exception in every international forum.
In addition, were Israel seriously threatened with extinction, the U.S armed forces would be sent in without hesitation. It's the ace in the hole, the insurance policy that enables Israel to ignore the Geneva Conventions and any other international laws that they want to. The U.S will not, has not ever permitted international legal action against Israel.

Amazing revolution that played out on social media, and TV! Many demonstrators said on fb and Twitter that they had conquered their fear of death.

Personally I think that Egypt will get a fine constitution. and have a good honest election, because the people of the world will ALL be watching and commenting on the internet... plus, everyone who writes about world politics, or is a commentator on world politics rushed to Egypt just to be there and have that experience on their resume.

We can only hope that this is the beginning of TRUE representative democracy in the world and not this phony bee ess that we all have where we always wind up voting for the various parties' choice of representatives for the monied classes.

That few minutes of democracy that we get in the voting booth every few years is not my idea of a functioning democracy.

What eventually transpires in Egypt and Tunisia should not take more than six months to shake out and then we'll see whether or not anything really changes.

I remain thoroughly skeptical.

The current mood is as regards these popular uprisings is very reminiscent of the great hopes for the future we recently witnessed in the United States when B.H. Obama was elected to replace Dubya as president.

come now the Vatican might have nation status widdin a nation but it is not on par wid Israel...plus the Vatican, the denomination it represents, is wealthy beyond anyone's knowledge n the irony is dat nuff of dat money come dung from olden days of Jewish persecution by the RC

RichD,

Yes and no.
She was an incumbent and it was her membership in the Republican Party that enabled her to get the seat in her first term and it was that incumbency in which she gained enough popularity to enable her to run a successful write-in campaign when her Republican constituency dumped her.

Were she an independent running as a write-in candidate for the first time, she would have stood no chance of winning as she did.

Secondly, is she truly an independent thinker or will she still follow the Republican way of voting on the issues now that she has been reelected?

Thirdly, even if she has now changed her way of thinking (which I doubt) she will have no clout since she and Bernie Sanders from Vermont are the only two &quot;independents&quot; in the Senate. If she doesn't toe the Republican party line, she gets no important committee assignments and no support from the Alaska Republican Party next election.
