Tough question RichD,
They are both economic systems that are polar opposites but which at times are forced to adopt some aspects of their polar opposite such as social welfare programs that are put into effect to make up for the shortcomings in the more advanced capitalist countries or the small individual entrepreneurial experiments in Cuba just starting..
But I guess that there is either capitalism which now can't even be called capitalism because of the way it has evolved into an oligarchy and the corporations globalization or socialism that exists in totalitarian DRK and technically can't be called socialism BECAUSE of the lack of democracy or the socialism that exists in Cuba with some suppression of rights due in measure to the war from the States.
I do not believe you can have a successful mix in of capitalism with a socialist system because capitalism is totalitarian at its base and socialism is democratic by definition.
You can't have half the people working and keeping all they make for themselves and the other half putting it all in a big pot to be shared.
Capitalism also has an end point that comes when it can no longer expand as it must to continue much as a shark must continue swimming or suffocate. .Capitalism depends on an endless market and the world has just about run out of markets.
When that happens, capitalism has outlived any usefulness it had and must be replaced with what will work and that is socialism.
Socialism works toward human need and supplying the necessities of a good life for all.
That sort of economy can go on forever because it does not depend on an endless market but only what is needed. Under that future state people will no longer be unemployed nor will they have to work 40 hours a week or two jobs just to survive.
Everyone will work and each will do their fair share of a much smaller workload.
Automation will not mean unemployment and suffering as it does now but rather the elimination of drudge work for the human race and will be encouraged rather than discouraged.
Too much to go into here . it would take weeks and months to explain the vision of what lies just ahead for humanity.
Common sense and the possession of reasoning powers beyond caveman mentality will lead us in the right direction. We just have to wait for capitalism to breathe its last breath, bury the corpse and walk out of this graveyard into a new beginning for the planet.
