as black people, do you believe the Government should force affirmitive action--as I call it affirmitive blacktion..

I mean, given the situation, it used to be the fire department - white bastien male,,then in the 90s they had to hire is reffered as "visible minorities"..
i think its a insult to people to hire because they have to have a percentage--for example when Toronto Fire places a ad, at the bottom they "encourage"people from visible minorities" or those with a handicap to apply"
you tell me-why would the fire department encourage a guy with a disability to apply?
how about hiring on the basis of your qualifications and your physical ability to drag someone out of a burning house?

There was always a percentage requirement...is just that it used to be 0% black!
Now when its mandated that the percentage be &gt;0 some people just concerned bout how insulting it is ... lol

that's what i was implying Ripton. the perception most people have is &quot;you only got the job because you're [ <span style="text-decoration: underline"> identifiable minority/disability</span>]&quot;. So in most cases, i think it hurts people but only because a lot of racists use it as a tool to further their racism.

It is a greater insult to not get employment because of your race then it is to be employed because to of regulations to enforce equal employment.

It is a disgrace to those who promote and maintain policies that result in the persistent refusal of employment to qualified people due to race.

my understanding is this.
The City of Toronto is in this thing where they are hiring based on knowing your east indian or muslim based on the name on your application..
for example, if your name is say Carl Johnson--you could be black or white
but if your name is Mohammad Sameer or Gurpreet Singh-they automatically know without physically seeing you in person based on the name on you application that you come from a quote &quot;visible minority&quot;
then they have hiring quotas so they get the job.

but i tell you--in Toronto alot of black people AND white people are getting passed up for Government jobs because they seem to be filling jobs with east indians.
dont believe me--walk into the City of Toronto human rescources or the Federal Govenment building at Scarborough--theres east indian women in there whos English is Sub Standard and they have jobs in the government--thats my problem
