Newton fell on very hard times yesterday and has scratched.

His dogs are not feeling well, and Newton himself took a bad tumble yesterday. I am sure he could use some hugs...

Sled dogs come in all sizes and coat length but the coats are all what we call &quot;double coated&quot;. They are a mix of many breeds(except for some who run purebred teams such as racing Siberians) which come in different coat lengths. None of the dogs you see in sled dog marathons is sensitive to cold weather, though in times of extreme cold you will see some dogs wearing jackets to help preserve warmth. They wear booties on their feet to protect them.

When reading a lot of the commentary, I determine that the smaller sleeker dogs are used in coastal terrain where being agile is more important than cross country, where being large thicker coated breeds such as Malamutes are more useful. This is what gives some mushers advantage or disadvantage, take your pick. Cross the mess of them and try to find the perfect all terrain sled dog is the trick!

There is so much to consider, size of the musher as well.

And then, to clarify further..some of the dogs in some of the pics in this thread are SPRINT dogs. That is a whole next game entirely.

The Sprint Dogs pull a featherweight sled that is empty as fast as they can for a very few quick minutes, whereas the marathon dogs pull a full load across mountains for days. A more slightly built sleeker dog is the norm for the Sprint Race, but as you see, anything goes!

It means he dropped out of this years race. I just hope he is OK. He got very wet after stepping into an overflow, and then was dragged by the team. Then he had to spend 3 to 4 hours on the trail to get to the next checkpoint for help on a day that was in the -20F below zero. It took the workers 10 minutes to remove the ice from his laces in order to remove his boots...meanwhile, he said his feet were hurting and burning, which is very worrisome. I haven't heard anything yet today but haven't been online since early this morning...
