To me, God and religion are completely separate. Does God need religion?



The belief in a creator or a God demands the suspension of logic and in that at least is not unlike religions which are the ritualistic wrappings of the belief in a supreme being.
Both are human concepts.

Who or what created God?.

There are a lot of unanswered questions.

Christopher Hitchens in one of his many debates on the existence of God said that in discussing the Big Bang theory of creation of the universe he explained to his young daughter that in that theory everything came from an explosion of a ball of something no bigger than a baseball.
She then asked; " What was outside that ball?"

God is not about logic. God is beyond our comprehension.

Derek,
How then can YOU comprehend or have a belief in God or is it that God IYO, like the vastness of space and time, is beyond our capacity to grasp an understanding of and just IS? (or was)

(My wife actually gets queasy/dizzy when she thinks about the infinity of the universe and has to stop.)

I don't believe in invisible beings, magic, ghosts, the Devil.
No one KNOWS how life came to be but science knows what life is made of and it is all things that are a natural part of the planet.
Believers in God and the Creation don't have any factual knowledge of how and when life came about but choose rather to believe that a supreme being created everything.

Neither of the two sides knows but Believers will believe and stick to the Creation idea until it is as disproven as were all the Gods and idols, superstitions et cetera that preceded our current crop of imaginary Gods.

The Volcano gods and the gods that controlled climate and brought needed rain and which required blood sacrifices were once as valid, no, even more valid and feared than are the current gods. Yet they have all gone away and anyone believing in them is looked upon as foolish or primitive. In fact if you read Leviticus it too is filled with the God inspired methods of sacrificing oxen or pigeons that are now considered foolish.
There are rules regarding who you can have sex with and when that are no longer adhered to and which are considered barbaric.
Slavery was okay in the Bible. And on and on.

Many people like Derek have dropped all the wrappings, the rituals and just gone for a belief in a supreme being. Some like Thomas Jefferson, were deists also: believing in a creator who did his/her creating and then left us to our own devices.

They are far more rational IMO than the Theists who believe that God wants us to pray to him, that He answers our individual requests like some celestial Santa Claus and who knows when we are sleeping and knows when we're awake and knows if we've been bad or good and will roast us in Hell eternal if we've been bad.

That science and we atheists don't know the date and time when life came about does not mean that we will not find out how that came about.
We only just recently found how DNA works and where humanity arose and spread over the Earth, the components that make up our physical beings and much else that is pointing toward the source of life on Earth.


This has been gone over time after time in these fora.

100 years ago we knew nothing about DNA or the building blocks of life. We didn't know that man started out in south west Africa and spread over the Earth from there proving that the Garden of Eden could not have been in the Holy Land nor in Ethiopia..

That knowledge was built upon previous knowledge and we will continue to build upon what we now know and the future will determine what is ultimately discovered about the origin of life.
At which point Creationism will join the Volcano god in being relegated to primitive and unrealistic beliefs of the past.

IMO

I'm not a theologian nor any sort of expert on God so I suggest you go watch some Christopher Hitchens or some of the Slave Sermon videos if you want your faith really shaken..
