Muslim custom of burial at sea

Having <span style="font-style: italic">spoken</span> to a number of Muslims (unlike you and your Fox News) I've come to the conclusion that there never was and never will be a custom of Islamic burial at sea.

Unless the person dies at sea.

Why the rush to carrying him miles and miles to water, when he (supposedly) died in a heavily fortified compound?

It's BS. I repeat. Complete, utter and total BS.

But carry on, guys; don't let me disturb your comfort zone.

No I don't think it's Islamic. I think they didn't want to be rude to his corpse, but they didn't want to bury him where his supporters could ever find him.

Assalaamu alaikum and greetings from Ghana to my fellow Boardites. Laaaaaaaang time! I hope you all are well and that my Canadian friends are not having any indigestion after the election on Sunday.

The Holy Qur'an stipulates that a Muslim must be buried in the ground. The body of the deceased must be ritually washed by designated persons (usually family members of the same sex). Husbands may wash their wives and vice versa. The body is then wrapped in a specific number of white cotton cloths/shrouds and a hole is dug in the ground and also a side-hole dug within the larger hole and they body is placed in this second hole, accompanied by prayers of the imam(s) and family members. The body is covered with green branches and the grave is filled. Usually only men attend the burial and the women stay behind at the home of the deceased to pray. The body must be buried within 24 hours of death (although this is sometimes slightly exceeded in certain circumstances). After the burial, the men return to the home of the deceased and more prayers are said. Muslims are not supposed to loudly weep or wail but must conduct themselves with decorum throughout.

So you see, Islamic burial is a highly ritualised and respectful procedure as specified in the Holy Qur'an and has no tradition of a sea burial, except I suppose in emergencies or under extenuating circumstances. So for binLaden to have been treated the way he was was like a Muslim taking a Christian's body and throwing it into a dumpster for the garbage trucks to deal with it. Respect had no part of it, trust me!

He wasn't buried at sea MsPeaches. He died about 10 years ago.

'Burial at sea according to Islamic tradition' really means nobody has to provide proof that the guy was killed recently.

hi, ms peaches, long time no hear from. hope all is well with u and urs in ghana as we in canada sip the bitter tea that is a stephen harper majority.

i question ur analogy. to take it to its full expression, it would be like a muslim having a dead christian dressed and put in his coffin in his full burial suit, have the funeral service with prayers, then throwng the coffin in a garbage dumpster. which is a bit equivocal on the subject of respct/disrespect.

i've read commentary from muslim clerics that say burial at sea is acceptable under extraordinary circumstances, or if there is a chance the grave will be defiled.

I dont think they had any concerns about being rude to his corpse,..(according to the reports) they certainly didnt have any when they were being rude to his living body by shooting him while he was unarmed,after first shooting his wife.

if he died as they said he did, then I think they did the best they could in a very bad situation....they said he was wrapped, prayed and tossed in the sea....and as ms peaches say, in extreme <span style="font-weight: bold">emergencies </span> - as was this case, they did the best they could....so me see it!!!

i strongly believe no disrespect was ever intended, well....maybe dem wudda disrespect him, but they know they would def be some serious repuccussions, so they did the 'best' they could~

now, me who work in the NYC downtown area, a tremble like leaf, cause trust me, dem naa go just let dis go so

the whole idea of being respectful to corpses in the muslim way blah blah blah...is a mockery;

when sunni &amp; shiite are blowing up mosques full of innocent people due to their fanatical ideologies, do they take the time to go back and respectfully bury those muslims?
