chile please mi was invited to jine a supposed bipartisan group pon FB..but all dem do is post proPNP and antiJLP allll day...wen i pointed out dat dem was no diffrant wid di tribalism an contrary to dem supposed intent, even di PNP ranking memba unfriend me... n mi an di biggest mout in the diaspora discuss much but i get the feeling it is more a building of image and career dan anyting else.... ...everybody wan to be leaders ..no one can juss work in the trenches side by side...can u imagine if all the great minds just did the work side by side , juss how much would get done...but di juggling fi positions , soundbites n recognition is a byatch to watch

I see. You are right bout that Vannie. A lot could be accomplished if we all worked together to achieve the same goal...but my question though is what is the goal/vision for Jamaica?

Being on the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board has nothing to do with being able to answer the post.

Firstly, "y peeps wi do menial work abroad but not a yaad..."

That is a very good question. The answer I tend to get is that doing the same menial work in Jamaica vs in the USA, UK, Canada etc. PAYS MORE.

They can do menial work in developed countries and be able to live comfortably and send back money to their families.

If they stayed in Jamaica to do the same work, they would be enduring a different type of struggle.

That makes sense to me when you compare the minimum wages but I always question the difference in cost of living.

I always assume that even with the higher cost of living in the USA for example, such individuals would prefer to struggle and live in a more developed country than struggle and live in Jamaica.

The Mexicans said the same thing to me about their country.

As for the title of the thread:

Nothing.

Not one has the Advisory Board said or even hinted at being "owed" anything. In fact, all we do is offer to donate money, time and knowledge while only asking for a little respect.

Local Jamaicans don't owe the diaspora anything and the diaspora doesn't owe Jamaica anything.

People WANT to help because they did not forget how Jamaica helped shape who they are, some want to move back, some want their family members still living there to have better opportunities and still others just want to see the country progress.

Moving back to Jamaica is not the only way people in the diaspora can contribute to bettering Jamaica (in fact that won't help in some cases).

Not sure why anyone thinks the diaspora thinks Jamaica owes them anything.

I am glad that you realized that the Jamaicans abroad can be just as tribal as in Jamaica.

I think the Diarrhea Organization is joke and the GOJ should not waste precious resources courting it.These organizations are just a way inflate the egos of Jamaicans and is of no use to Jamaica at home or abroad ( Think of CARICOM without the walkers).

We have Embassies, High Commissions and Consular Missions abroad already.

The GOJ is the one that help setup the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board so it would be quite foolish to not &quot;court&quot; it.

Smart countries like Mexico, Mali, India, Israel, Chile and many others have taken their diaspora seriously and done more than just utilize embassies, high commissions and consular missions.

India actually went to their diaspora for financial help 3 times when they had balance of payments crises instead of going to the IMF.

I think you should limit your argument to say countries. GO Mexico, India, Chile were for most of the 20th Century corrupt and inept.....just like......

What is exactly wrong with borrowing from the IMF vis a vis any other body?

Jamaica is not using what Jamaicans are paying for (our Foreign Reps), we should seek to minimize cost and bureaucracy. There are many NGOs and Talk-Shops based in Jamaica already. No need to have Green-Card Patriots complicating the soup.

It is not as if the Diaspora or the fruits of the Diaspora have never been lent to the Jamaican State. In 90s (the hay day of the Ponzi Bonds), money poured into GOJ Paper from Jamaicans and other at home and abroad.

Pretty sure if GOJ, Cash Minus and/or OLUMP types, have a good scheme and promote it well. Money will find its way from Jamaicans in every nook and cranny worldwide
